Hi

I've been lurking for a while and you all seem a friendly lot so I thought I'd ask your advice on a problem at my yard.
We recently got a new horse and put him out oin the field with the other geldings. Soon after we had to bring him in with sores/scabs around his mouth. The vet thought it was mudfever and we treated it and kept him in for a few days until it cleared up and then put him back in the field.
Now all the horses that have shared the field with him except for one have the same sores. But they are all clearing up with the mudfever treatment and being in. Its not contageous as none of the mares have it and the same people handle them all without taking any special precautions. So we are stumped. Someone mentioned that there was some equine herpes going around(???, but the horeses were all recently vaccinated (not sure about the new horse) and the vet thinks it might be a reaction to buttercups (never happened before and the mares field has more buttercups than the geldings.
So we are stumped and untill we know what the cause is we can't put them out or properly treat them (or the field if need be). They are also all of work at the moment as we can't put bits in their mouths.

Sorry its so long-but any ideas very welcome.

Buttercup allery is common, especially if they are nosing among lots and they are dense.

An allergy takes time to build up so it's quite common for a horse to suddely develope a sensitivity which was not there before. Weather conditions too play a part. As for the mares not suffering I'm stumped too!

I'd take a cutter to the field and treat those buttercups then try turning them out again. Buttercups are a blasted nuisance anyway!!
