:o Okay, so it wasn't very spectacular - but at least I feel like I've broken my duck at new riding school :o
I was trotting a circle with Wrigglycob when he did a "normal" spook and dropped a hand in height (bless him, it was a very windy day and I think there were some horse-eating pheasants in the bushes). However he also decided to go sideways as well as down, so I ended up without a horse underneath me at all!
I landed on my feet, and might have been awarded a decent 8 or 9 out of 10, except that momentum carried me backwards onto my bum :p
Lesson didn't go too well - but at least I got back on ;)

Hope you're ok! Its always nice if you can come off and land on your feet :D but when you end up on arse - well.... hopefully nothing is too sore!!! Good for you getting back on!

Since you landed on your feet (at least initially), I think it qualifies as an acrobatic dismount! Ta dah!!!
Are you obligated to buy your instructor cookies now?

Next time can you do a somersault on the way down? ;)
In a strange way, it must feel a relief to get the first fall out of the way... It'll be my turn soon no doubt, there's been a couple of close calls. Not so sure I'll be doing it quite as well as you did though :D

Wobblydeb welcome to the "equinauts" club (we fly through the air with the greatest of ease, those daring old girls on the ...horse) -OK it dosn't rhyme or scan but I'm probably concussed most of the time :D :D
Well done for not hurting yourself and for getting back on - I can also proudly state that I did not fall off or get bolted with this week, but only because I bottled out of riding :D
edited to correct my appalling spelling :)

Helps if you have a shetland Julia ;)
I don't think I've ever landed on my feet, nor even nearly.. so well done Wobblydeb :D
My best (and most embarrassing) was not doing up last horse's girth properly and feeling the saddle start to slip in trot in the school. It just went further round until I realised I had no option but to flop onto the ground.. cue hilarity from onlookers and bemusement of horse :o Won't make that mistake again.

I've never managed it before either!!! I've mostly landed on my head or shoulder (broken collar bone twice) so this was a whole new and PREFERABLE experience! :D

Get lucky?
I've been trying to figure out how it happened, and I seem to remember my right leg coming upwards, and me doing my usual "over the front shoulder head first" bit. But somehow got the right leg over quick enough to get to the ground before my head :) Not sure how i ended up facing backwards though......

I somersaulted off a couple of weeks back, and was actually rather pleased at proof that I could still fall off at my advanced years and not be too badly hurt. :D I think I'd begun to feel a bit scared about coming off, and that's obviously not good. I wouldn't say I'm looking forward to the next time, but I'm no longer scared of it. :)

I think I am getting nervous. My OH has fallen off in his lesson and my older daughter just slipped off a shetland (at least that wasn't far to the ground) and my son just kind of slid off trotting. They all say it is my turn next...

My OH got bucked off yesterday and landed on his feet standing next to the horse and still holding the reins  - the horse looked more surprised than he did :D

Last Christmas I got on a green horse. First I was walking him. Then I desided to ride him. Then my father took the horse around once. Then I desided to try it on my own. Oscar is the horse name anyway, Oscar walked a couple of steps and then trotted and canter. I was tring to stop him befor he trotted. I pulled the reins back and didn't work so then I tried pulling on side so the horse goes in a circle, I got this from a vidio I got, Well as I'm turning him with my left hand I felled on the snow. Thats the first time I ever felled of a horse. The next day I got on him agin. I guess I'm a little crazy cause I thought it was fun. I can't wait for the day I get to do it with my horse. I think it cause I felled on snow and not the ground. So I give my self a three for this fall.

Agree, the first fall is terrifying if you are over 50. I think my teacher too thought I might fall to pieces. Did anyone actually ask their doctor for a test for osteoporosis? I didnt as I did not want to be told not to ride.
I think one may easily land facing backwards if one has executed the reverse of mounting.
But Wobbly deb I am sorry you fell. I didnt like the way people were saying to you that the only way to learn to ride is to push one's comfort limit. Yes, by all means have the confidence to face a new teacher or try a new school. But when it comes to being on a horse, I dont do anything scary and I learned without.

I know how you feel. My horse did the "duck and run" on me last week. It caught me completely of guard and I landed on my back...ouch! :(
