The right horse depends on how much riding you have done. Will you have experienced folk to ride with and help you when needed? Will you have to look after it all by yourself or will parents help? Will you keep it at home or at a yard somewhere? What do you want to do with your horse? How much can you afford to spend? Are you the sort of person who gets attached to an animal and cannot part with it? (in which case get a sturdy mountain & moorland type, one you will never grow out of!)
There are 101 questions you should ask yourself and your parents should ask themselves before you even think of buying a horse.
Sadly horses don't come in a handy package, like a computer, suitable for any particular rider, they have minds of their own and change them at the drop of a hat! Any horse you have will challenge you on the odd occasion even if they are sold as "ideal first pony" and "bomb proof!"

Hello. The only way to find the right horse for you is to go horse shopping and to look at and ride as many different horses as you can. The more you try, the more you'll get the idea about which type of horse you are looking for. You tend to just know when the horse is right for you!

Always keep a horses' name that he came with, don't buy one from a sale which sells all maner of horses with no papers or history. Always try to go for a private sale or a dealer who comes recommended by someone reliable.
Naming a horse usually is the privilage of the breeder!

Wally, how on earth do you pronounce that?! And what does it mean?
Wally

Ugla is Icelandic for Owl, and Frį is Icelandic for from.
To pronounce it break it down snęl is like snail but pronounced with an 'i'. dubein, is 'doobine' and the stošum bit is 'stothum' the letter š is the same as a 'th' in English if you see what I mean.
Snaeldubeinstošum is a place in Iceland.
We just call her Ugla.
Lots of ours have Icelandic names usually the first name describes the horse, we have a bay called Jarpur, which simply is Icelandic for Bay horse, the female of this is Jörp.
Fįkur Frį Stora Vatnskarši, simply means steed from the large "something I'm not sure of" by the lake! it's one I'll have to look up.
Ljósfaxi means pale mane and lots of it.
Gjoska describes the colour of a grey horse, Gjoska is white volcanic ash. The icelanders don't agonise over naming horses. Blakkur is a black horse and there are a lot of Blakkurs out there!!

my regular icey ride has an easy name..branda.:)
some of the iceys roudn the corner have real icelandic names but those are all the youngs ones they bred themselves or one of the 3 horses they actually got from iceland the rest of the iceys coem from up north here in germany or france and have usual names...
i prefer the icey names.

Oh I have a Gjoska called Rhianna. Think when I go back to the stables I will tell her. Is the name pronounced just as it is spelt? Never thought I would be learning Icelandic. :)
What do you call a Strawberryroan? Her name is Dacia pronounced Daisy and is a right pain with my pony. Chases her all over and if she is in the paddock before Rhi then I have a problem gettting Rhianna in as Dacia hogs the gate waiting for her

I ought to know what strom means as therea re a lot of place names here in Shetland with a Strom in them, Clach Na Strom is one of them, Strom Firth is another. I'll ask about.
Gjoska is pronounces without the G just Joska but more of a "y" for the "J" sound, if you see what I mean
