Never had anything to do with mares in the past so I'm rather ignorant on matter.

My OH sometimes helps to look after a mare at our livery yard to help out. Now she usually loves my OH (Steve) and comes running to him at the gate. If she see's him with me and Monac she calls across the field to him etc.
(I've never got on with her!)

Just recently she's been impossible to catch from the field (firstly it was her owner that had the problem but she's being difficult for Steve now as well). She's also started to get agressive and charged at Steve and my daughter in the field and has tried to bite a few times as well.

Her owner has told Steve it's due to the mare being in season and she's thinking of putting her on Moody Mare Mix.

How often do mares come into season and for how long? (The horse in question is about 3½ years old).

Thanks
Sarah

Our mare Fifi comes into season about every 3 weeks and it can last up to a week. Although she doesn't tend to get particularly agressive, just turns into a total tart and winks and squirts at anything approximately male....

I've heard that for some mares the first couple of seasons in the year can be quite bad but then they calm down. How long has the owner had her? Was she as bad as this last year?

Do Steve and your daughter smell of another mare? It might be she thinks they're trying to steal "her" boyfriend (not sure if horses' think this way - someone correct me if I'm wrong!)

Thanks for the reply.

Do they really come into season every 3 weeks!!! Is that all year round or only at certain times of the year.

Only had the mare (Tasha) since November I think.

My daughter loans a pony called Roxy (mare) who has recently been moved to the same field as Tasha since her foal was weaned (they would smell of her sometimes, depending on what order we do the various horses).

When Tasha is being difficult to catch Steve and my daughter usually bring Roxy in first and they ignore Tasha for a while. This makes her more willing to be caught.

OH NO!!! It's just occurred to me that Roxy might get like this as well now that her baby is weaned. How long will it be before she comes into season?
