In the turn-on-the forehand toward the left, a horse should cross his right hind in front of the left under his body, then step over with his left, while stepping more or less straight up and down with his front legs (making a very small circle with the front, while making a big arch with the hind legs). He may be flexed slightly to the right (looking slightly that direction), but shouldn't have a big bend in his body or neck.

The aids should come primarily from the right leg, which asks the right hind to step under (I've always been taught to use the leg behind the girth, but others on this site say that they are taught to use it at the girth). It sometimes helps to ask for a little flexion with the right rein before asking, but the primary rein contact should come from the left rein once the horse has started stepping under, in order to steady the shoulder and keep the horse from overbending in his neck.

i think it would be best if you asked a riding instructor to show you, then you'll really know when your getting it right!
