I have the problem that a lot of long riding boots are either too big in the calf or too small on the toes, so I am planning on buying some jodhpur boots and half-chaps for some schooling. In some circumstances, I may wish to use FULL chaps for comfort. The question is, would I be 'conning' myself if I used full chaps for schooling some horses, especially one or two I ride who are only just being introduced to jumping and can become rather anxious. Some people say that full chaps are reasonable in such circumstances as they are assisting the rider is assisting the horse, but others say that this gives the rider a false sense of security. PLEASE ADVISE! Those of you that think full chaps are a reasonable option for this purpose, could you recommend reasonably priced ones for not general use?

I would definetely say try to get used to field boots or dress boots, whichever. But the only time I don't school in chaps or half chaps is before a show. I wear chaps over jeans or breeches most of the time. As long as you can make the transition back to your boots, go for it! But don't over estimate what chaps can do.... they only make it easier on your leg, but it is still up to you to squeeze to make the chaps work. I personally like half chaps (try Ariat) with my zipper paddock boots to make the transition a ride or two before I wear field boots because they have less of an affect than chaps because, obviously, there isn't as much leather. But also, they are MORE effective than just boots. They help a lot in the transition. I usually wear them with breeches, but a few people I know of wear them with jeans... IMHO...

Hello,
I use chaps all the time and I love them!! I use Kieffer half chaps and they hug the leg and are the most comfortable things in the world.
Well that what I think :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :)
