I need some advice on how to slow down a horse. :( Her owner finds she has too much energy and tries to burn it by letting her go really really fast as soon as she gets on her. But that still doesn't work. I have tried many things to get her to slow down but nothing is working. I have no idea if she's confused, stubborn, or maybe wants to play. She also gets distracted very easily and spooks at a lot of objects. She is very rude and pushy around everyone. How do you get a horse to stay still when mounting? I have a lot of things to try to fix and I desperately need help! thanx :)

First off is she on a lot of grain...if she is reduce it.
Im going to list things so I dont ramble:
1.before riding lunge to get some respect and control
2.when getting on if she walks off back her up, let her stand still for about 10 seconds, give her a rub on the neck, get off keep and keep repeating until she stops...takes some time but it has worked for my horse
3.try working in circles...it takes more work for a horse to carry its self in a circle then it does just going around the ring
4.also try things like serpintines, making figure eights around cones, and other things to keep her paying attention to you.
hope this helps :)

Bacarel is spot on with the advice.
Is this a young horse?
With regards mounting, set aside a few hours to work on that, respond and reward and end on a good note. If the horse is full of beans they won't feel much like standing still while you get on!
Definitely look at the amount that's being fed and make sure the horse is being fed to workload.
Definitely lunge before hand, it will take a bit of steam off and once you are working in the sandschool, don't let the horse move up a gear until you are ready but just riding round and round the school will bore him, so give him plenty to think about (cones, serpentines, trotting poles, grids on the ground to steer him through and keep him thinking).
Good luck, and stay calm yourself and that should also help!

Thank-you so much for the advice but I have already tried all of those things. She is not getting fed anything that's going to make her hyper. She only get's a 1/4 sc of hifat. Yes, she is young. After a while of circling I am able to get her to stop but soon as I ask her to again we just repeat the same thing. I'm running out of ideas...

does she get a lot of turnout? if not that could add to her energy, living out 24/7 could help a lot, also are you a relaxed rider as if you are tense/emotional/ride with short, restricting reins etc and have a 'hot bum' you could be adding to the problem, is she any different with other riders? I would also definitely say that riding her fast as soon as you get on will not help matters as she will anticipate this and get even more excitable and rushy. i think it would be more effective to posibly go to the other end of the spectrum and only school in walk with lots of walk-halt transitions to get her listening for a while until she is happy with this and isn't anticipating speed then slowly build this up including lots of transitions to keep her listening. I guess you could try a calming supplement to see if this helps but i'm not sure how much this would affect her. To combat the bolshiness on the ground I would do a lot of groundwork with her to gain her respect, but if all this doesn't work it may just be her personality which is hard to change and she may be better to go to someone who enjoys a horse of this nature. Good luck and i'm sorry if i sounded too discouraging just giving any advice I can think of!!!
