How about a NR speak sticky

After reading the post about the sticky and the stolen horse register thing I got a few ideas . How about putting a sticky in the cafe area ( or general , just one that is viewed quite alot ) . We could include all the NR speak people use ( YO , RS ect. ) for the new members to look at . It would save new members posting in threads asking what people mean when they use these abbrevevations . What do the Mods think about this idea . I think it would help lots of people ( including the not so new members , I still sometimes get confused :p ) . What do you think .

Yeah , fair point . But I think newer riders don't really know all these abreviations ( I still get quite confused :p ) .

I think it's a really good idea and I would have really appreciated (sp?) something like this when I first started riding. Also, Do you now of any books with all 'horsey' terms in? I really want one.

I'm not too keen on the idea for several reasons. I think abbreviations make it very difficult for people new to riding to understand what's being talked about and also those for whom English isn't their first language. I also think it encourages the 'elitist' aspect, i.e if you don't know the abreviations you aren't a rider.

For all these reasons I feel it would be better to write clearly what you are talking about and keep abbreviations to a minimum or we end up one step away from text speak.

How about a plain and simple dictionary?

For instance I spent hours frantically pawing through the site trying to find out what a "Numnah" was, and then I wondered what a float had to do with driving. (I still don't know.) and then a horse box is apparently not a stall, and a head collar is a halter...

US/UK terminology confusion is always fun. I worked at a yard in England last summer after having ridden only in the US for the past 7 years.

Headcollar=Halter
Stable=Stall
School=Ring
Horse Box=Trailer(you rarely see "horse boxes" in the US)
Lorry=Truck(the 18 wheel trucks)
Float=Australian for Horse Box or Trailer(I'm pretty sure, correct me if I'm wrong)
Yard=Barn or stableyard(not the back yard)
Hack=Trail Ride(though the word Hack is used in the US as well)

....I know there are more, but I can't think of them right now.
