I always wanted to ride too. I never thought I'd be able to but I put a job advert in the local magazine and I got a job working with a lady who owned two horses and a pony. I never expected anything, but after a couple of months she asked me if I'd ever wanted to ride. I told her that it was one of my dreams - and from that week on she gave me lessons virtually every week and even took me to a dressage competition. The work is usually there if you can find it! Good luck!
I'm now in the process of looking for another job, and I haven't ridden for a couple of months as the horse died, and I can't ride the other one. I really appreciate the help she gave me and I'd recommend this to anyone - by working first you get to really know and understand horses before attempting to ride them.

If you want to ride ask for the recommendations from folk who ride locally, or phone the BHS and ABRS and ask them for a list of school near you. If you are in the UK. BHS are in Warwickshire, ABRS are in Penzance.
It's best to start on riding school horses that are used to beginners than trust to luck and someone's horse who may not be used to carrying novices.;)

If you're in the US (Trenton, NJ?), a wonderful way to get horse experience is to volunteer at a hippotherapy center. Go to the North American Riding for the Handicapped Association's website at http://www.narha.org for a list of riding centers. Almost all of them need volunteers. The one I'm volunteering at lets me ride as a thank you for volunteering, and the horses are, of necessity, as close to 100% bomb-proof as critters get!
Good luck!
