can anyone please help me - we have amber a 16h TB for 12 week now - has prev done SJ, XC, Dressage and all apparently in a normal snaffle but was told that for show jumpin they had a bit that enable the horse to turn quicker (assume loop) Anyway prob i now have is that whenever we go to jump amber she goes totally headstrong - nearly pulls arms from sockets to slow her down - she will approach jump 1 ok but from there on it we have lost it. Same out on hack - she just gets it into her head to go and that it - can anyone suggest a nice bit to help control her and make riding a more pleasurable experience - or anything else that might help - we are doing alot of groundwork with her and pole work

You may want to consider changing her noseband rather than her bit - what noseband is she in? If it is just a normal cavesson one then you may wish to try a drop or a grackle. See what other people think though as I have no experience of them.

i can't tell you much.. (i'm having a simular bit problem, but it's really do to with my horse being more comfy in the mouth and things), but when you go to jump a jump, do you go in canter?
if so, i've found with many mad horses i've ridden in the past is to circle around the jump in trot until they have calmed down a bit, then make the circle larger and further out until you can turn clean into the line of jump. and do not let him go ANY faster until about 2 strides away from the jump, then let him go! :D
after that i suppose you'd have to come back to trot (if possible) and just take a short approach to the next jump so he doesn't have time to charge at it.

hope that helps. ^_^

Firstly check her mouth to make sure that it has not split (in the corners of her lips) with all that pulling shes been doing, if their mouth splits it often makes them lean more as it sort of numbs the pain. If her mouth is split then give her a few days off to let it heal.

Then you could try a copper roller, cherry roller or a waterford bit, all of which arte very difficult for horses to lean on. You could try these with the nose bands suggested above.

You could also try a hackamore or a bitless bridle.

Good luck!! ^_^
