Bonnie got herself tangled up in her rug and the electric fencing last week after a fracas with some cows. as a result she's skinned parts of her heel on her hind off-side leg. we have got the swelling and heat down by cold hosing, bandaging and bute but the wound itself is still looking a bit weepy and sore. we have been washing it daily with a very weak pevodine solution and using a herbal wound cream but it there anything else i should be doing? i'm a bit worried coz its obviously sore and she's shifting her weight more onto her front feet which is really bad as they are still recovering from laminitis. and tips/advice very welcome :)

Heels are a nightmare, sounds like your doing most everything. You could try some NuGel or IntraSite (you can get both from a normal chemist) its a gel that goes on then drys to form a barrier so crap dosen't get in the wound but somehow it still lets all the nasties out, it is great stuff. They use it on people after surgery if the wound needs to carry-on draining or if stitching would be difficult and it has stuff in to premote healthy healing etc.

thanks jessey, i've heard of intrasite before. will try and get hold of some. its a bugger to treat coz its under all her feathers and she won't let you get in there to give it a good clean up. i'm just thankful she's not lame on that leg!

Could you tie the feathers in a pony tail to keep them out the way and let the air to the wound? :D :D
IntraSite would be well worth a try, as it dries into a jelly type stuff it only needs doing every few days.

   her showing career would be over!!! mum would kill me if i did such a thing! she was bad enough when i (accidentally) lopped too much off her tail, oops!!

Jessey, i've considered trying that, or bandaging up the fetlock to keep her feathers away from the wounds but not sure how she'd take to that. she has feather but not a huge amount, might be a bit tricky to plait.
