View Full Version : My horse does not drop when urinating

Just to say I have had the vet out who says nothing wrong Jake is just being lazy. The vet advised against too much sheath cleaning, as all the good bacteria will be removed.

The main problem is when Jake urinates it runs down his belly then onto the floor – I know the vet said this OK but just wondered has anyone else come across this. I tend to regularly rinse his skin with water then use a very mild hibiscrub when it seems very damp on his skin. My worry is in this warm weather if I don’t keep it clean it will get very sore.

I try not to clean his actual sheath too much but Jake gets very mucky and shows his discomfort by being very sensitive around his sheath area. I have cleaned inside his sheath and got a lot of mess out but am just not sure about getting right into the back area. Am I wasting my time by not doing the job properly and getting this bean out????

Thanks for any advice
Cathy.

Have you ever seen a horse do this before??? But it does sound like a good idea to clean his tummy area, as it would get sore and attract flies during this hot weather. As for cleaning sheaths I do mine whenever it seems like doing. But then my boy gets that excited about even getting dinner his "bit" pops out all on its own. So I can give this a quick scrub every so often and stop it getting too crusty. Uhhhhhukkkk job really, but seems to work for him!!!!

Ewww. Depending on the horse, urine can really irritate the skin. How weird that a horse can be 'too lazy' to drop?!
Most geldings will try very hard (stretching hind legs far back, standing on their toes, peeing on absorbent ground, etc.) to avoid getting splashed.
I would be interested to hear a second opinion on this...

Rupert doesn't drop (in fact he is very shy and virtually never drops ;) ) when urinating...but he never gets it on himself - he always stretches right out and angles himself so that it misses him (if you see what I mean).

LOL. DJ used to be like that! I had to look away so he could pee. If I tricked him and looked at him it made him very uncomfortable and if I looked at him when he got ready to pee he would just rather hold it in.
He lost all shame though once I started cleaning his sheath from time to time.
He is much less modest now and will pee right beside you if he feels like it.

Yes, he likes to hide in the back of the stable to do it so no-one can see  :D

Thanks everybody - instead of rushing to see what we can see - if you know what I mean :D we will give the poor lad some privacy and maybe he will get used to it
