I give my horse alfalfa as an extra feed in addition to pellets.I now soak them , both the pellets and cubes, but what do i do if she starts choking on them again?when i first gave her the cubes she choked, and got the alfalfa up herself, same when i tried the pellets, she started stumbling , then layed down on her side. After i got her up i saw her neck constrict and her eyes bulging.i need to know what to do just in case this happens again, even though i now soak them. Thanks

hi thistle has had the same problem but both times we had to get the vet and her put a tube down her throght to clear it
i think as long as you soak them well you should be fine but if it does happen that she can't get it up herself i would call a vet
how long do you soak them for?

I've been told by my vet to do nothing. They sort it out for themselves and you can do more harm than good trying to do something. If it's very bad the vet would need to come out and tube them.
How long do you soak the feed for? The alfalfa pellets I use say 10 mins, but I find with one of mine I need to soak them for at least half an hour to be certain he won't choke.

The pellets i have i soak for about 20-25 minutes , the cubes until they are totally broken up.As you said though, these pellets seem to take longer to get soft. Thanks for they reply.it gives me piece of mind that she will be ok JUST IN CASE it happens again, wich i will take every precaution so it does not.
