Hello, just a simple question - how can you tell when a mare is season??
Thanks :)

With Beryl she starts sulking, won't talk to you and pulls faces when you touch her stomach or do up her girth. With Rosie she starts flirting with anything remotely male and squirts everywhere. I have never quite worked out why it is that I have such a soft spot for mares :D .

with Rose she pees everywhere and lifts her tail and shows that she is gagging for it, wonderful sight!
Molly ditto, she stands legs akimbo, peeing everywhere.
Aimee donkey throws herself at Ferguson, rubbing her bottom in his face, and weeing and legs akimbo hoping he will get the idea.
Mouse donkey as above but also making the foal mewing gestures with her mouth!
We have a load of total tarts and one 9hh donkey gelding - gosh does Fergus get the girls going.

Ah ok! A lady I know was asking about seasons and for some reason she thought Stumps may be in season. You two have confirmed that she may actually be in season - she is letting out fluid everytime a gelding comes close, swishing her tail, marching about with her behind on show!
Just wondered why she was suddenly peeing for no reason everytime she saw a gelding! Little miss flirty/tarty she is!
Here is a funny pic just cos I love her so much

Hiya! Great pic :D
The 'average' is about 5 or so days at a time, roughly 3 weeks apart. BUT, this is a generalisation as it can vary greatly from horse to horse. My girl has been about 6 weeks between her first and second season and is also much worse on her second!

Ah thanks - I had just given her a malteaser (just a little treat) and she pulled that face!!
ooh I need to swat up on seasons it looks like!! - reason I dont think I realised is because she is kept with an aged gelding who doesnt pay her much attention - flirting wise.
Although i did notice today when the posh tb gelding in the field next door was feeling horny so started flirting with my tarty pony!!
She hasnt been the typical moody mare though - should I anticipate a mood change?

Not necessarily.
Some mares suffer really badly...mine is constantly pulling faces and won't let any horse within a mile of her at the moment...she was bucking like crazy at a horse walking on the other side of the wall today!! Some just have physical sensations...tickly/sensitive around the girth/back etc or purely squirting. Of course there are probably some mares who have all of the above!
There are some mares (not many I bet!) where you can hardly tell they are in season at all!

I was just surprised to see all this fluid come squirting out of her at random times during the days!
I thought she had a weak bladder - haha! :o
I have ridden the last few days not realising she was in season and feeling hornier then usual and I havent had any problems except her displaying herself!!
Sarah - I am supposed to be hacking out with rig who is quite calm in company, but is this really adviseable when Stumps in such a flirtatious mood. It wouldnt be fair for her to lead him on!

Hmmm....I'm not really knowlegable about this, but if it were me, I probaby wouldn't hack out with a rig whilst my mare was in season. A rig retains the characteristics and behaviour of a stallion, so I would assume that to put a rig and an in season mare together would be a bit of a nightmare.
I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong tho!
