Not winter yet but I was inspired by miriam :p
How much coat can you clip off a horse and still keep it turned out 24/7 throughout the winter? Rugged of course to compensate :p

My tb x pony had a low trace and lived out 24/7.
Magic, who is a fat little welsh a had a bib and went out without a rug on.
Pepper wasn't clipped.
Treasure (welsh b x arab) had a chaser and was rugged.
If you look at my avatar, that is Bella in the snow when she was clipped, and here are some pics of them!

I've full clipped Benj before now - just left legs and half head on (but that was only cos he wouldn't let me clip the top half) :D He needed to lose weight and I needed to be able to feed plenty of hay, so the weight control had to come from making him use energy to keep warm. He was rugged all winter and spent the worst weather in a huge thick rug with a full neck that I'm sure was never designed with a section A in mind :D

my mare lived out ruggless with a bib clip one winter. i wouldn't do anything more than a low trace on toby if he were to live out 24/7 in the winter. he had a high trace this year and needed a neck hood on when indoors and out coz he's such a wimp he feels the cold really badly. so it really depends on the horse.

A couple of years ago when my two were out 24/7 I had my cob fully clipped, legs aswell and my mare with a hunter clip including her head. As long as you rug up to compensate they will be fine.....that includes a neck rug :)

However much you take off you simply compensate by replacing with an equivalent weight rug. Remember that being out 24x7 means that they can run around and keep warm - whereas stabled horses can't. With a good heavy weight rug, a bit of shelter for the worst bits and plenty of good quality hay you could full or hunter clip if you like.
