Tail loss

My friend's horse has lost about half it's tail - hair just falling out. It's a mare about 22yrs old. No cows in the field, no change of diet. Has anyone come accross this before?

Is there any signs of itching/rubbing it out? I would maybe try some Benzol Benzoate (?sp) and if shes still loosing it with no sign of rubbing I would probably speak with the vet, seems odd ......Hmm, just a thought, has her tail been trimmed reacently, my friends mare had a long tail and used to stand on it and pull it out that way.

Apparently not. No little visitors. It's not long enough for her to stand on it I wondered wether it could be hormonal.
