Get some jodphurs, you can get some fairly cheap ones and they're much more comfortable than riding in jeans.

Ditto - or leggings if you can't afford jodphurs...pretty much anything except jeans. The thick seams are to blame and you really will feel a world of difference with a fabric that stretches :)

Get some jods, you won't regret it! I think the cheapest and nicest ones I had were from my local tack shop - phoenix I think the brand was, they've lasted and lasted and lasted.... :D

I'm int he same situation as yourself, but my lessons consist of cantering and jumping and such, so my inner calves were actually quite tender for a few days after the lesson. I don't think I'm quite ready to grab a pair of jod's yet, but I am going to go for a pair of half chaps this weekend.. I won't have to worry about washing the jods after every time they get diry, and with horses that's just about every ride

Definitely get a pair of jods or get a pair of full or half-chaps to put over your jeans. Any of these should take care of the problem.

That's what riding pants are made for. Get a good pair and you'll be fine. It can be a bit difficult sometimes to get some that fit if you don't know a good tack shop. I just ordered some and they're way too big! I'm fairly dissapointed as this means another week riding in jeans with the seam rubbing along my thighs. Still, you can buy jodphurs at any tack shop or order them online. They should be snug but not tight and come down about two inches below the heel of your boot when you're riding.

This happened to me a few weeks ago- REALLY bad- like pus-oozing friction burns bad. :( From riding in boot-cut regular jeans and working on the sitting trot and canter.

I went the very next day and bought a pair of those (in any other context extremely dorky) stretchy denim tight leggings- really light weight- and a pair of snug suede half chaps. I put bandages on my burns, then the leggings, then the half chaps- and was able to ride even with the bad burns without too much discomfort. They are mostly healed now and I haven't had any problems since I started riding in leggings and half chaps.

If you're on a budget then have a look at robinsons web site. I'm currently wearing a pair of their robust jods which are very comfy. I think they are about £15 so not too pricey.

Decent half chaps are about £50 and I've always found cheap ones not be good value, (go saggy quickly) plus if the jeans ruck up under them they will still rub

If you like the look of jeans to ride in - then you can get 'jean jodhs' or even riding jeans - with no inner seam and a full seat - but they are boot cut so you could wear them normally too.

Robinsons (country leisure) if you're in the U.K definately sell them but I'm sure other places would too.

Failing that - full chaps would help stop the chaffing from normal jeans too.

i lkie riding in my ridding breeches, but there a hassle for me. i'm usually in my chaps and jeans. actually after shcool thats like my daily outfit. i usually wear breeches at the show. but my mom can't ride in anything but breeches and boots cuz she gets cuts and bruises. another good brand i like and i contantly use is "tuff rider" they last and there really comfy. :p

If you like the look of jeans but don't feel happy in jodhs/breeches then the riding jeans might be a good idea.

The reason your legs are getting rubbed from wearing jeans is because most normal jeans (i.e. ones not made specifically for horse riding) have an inside seam - which will rub horribly against your legs and cause you a lot of discomfort. That's the reason jodhpurs and breeches or riding jeans are so comfortable - because they have no inside seam that can rub against the saddle etc when riding.

Personally I prefer jodhpurs/breeches but have a friend that hates wearing them - so she always rides in either riding jeans or jeans and full chaps to prevent chaffing.

Hang on ... will try to find a picture of riding jeans for you ...

Hope this helps

I always ride in jeans and never get rubbed raw or painful anywhere.

The only thing I don't like is when I do lot of rising trot work the stirrup leathers pinch a bit sometimes. Wear either long socks under your jeans (like walking socks that come up to your knee) or a nice pair of full chaps.

Half chaps often stop chaffing or any pain, try - www.justchaps.com

me eather. i love riding in jeans. but you should ride in what you feel most comfortable in. you know they have breeches that look like jeans? :p they are made from denim, but don't have that painful seam. try: www.doversaddlery.com or www.statelinetack.com :)

I ride in jods. There are riding jeans without seams, but riding in jeans, the seam can rub against your leg and hurt a lot. And riding gloves are a must, for me, anyway. There's this horse I ride, Corky, he keeps tossing his head. Without gloves, a rider is sure to get blisters, that's what happened to me, but then I got riding gloves.

Half chaps stop the chafing, protect the leg, and are often cheaper than jodphurs. For my first year of riding lessons, I wore short boots and half chaps over drainpipe jeans. I bought my first pair of jodphurs just 2 months ago because the drainpipe jeans were wearing out. :)

Alternately, very thick socks can also protect your lower legs if you can't buy half chaps right away.

I would have been fine to stick it out in jeans and let my legs get thicker skin, except for the stupid tirrup leathers that were grabbing and pinching at my skin. Felt more like little monsters biting, but that's just me :p I have yet to ride in my jods and half chaps, but it shall be one painless fiasco

I mounted up in my lesson this afternoon and I was like, "hmmm... something's wrong..." then I asked for a trot and the pinching reminded me! I'd totally forgot to put on my chaps and spurs! Had to hop back off and leave him tied while I ran to the car and finished getting dressed. :) Guess I was just too concerned with dressing him. ;)

Anyone else get bruises on their thighs? I'm hoping I'll just toughen up..

my mom gets bruises on her leg really bad unless she wears her breeches and boots. it's been this way for like 20+ yrs. (since she started riding.) i think that some peoples legs just can't handle the seams. :(

I ride in soft stretchy jeans of very light denim material with short or long boots and cords trousers in short boots, too thick for long boots, both are comfortable for riding in.

Yep - my only riding injuries so far have been bruised thighs and blistered fingers once. Hope it stays that way too! :) And I thought people just wore gloves to stop their hands getting cold :o oh well, I know better know!

Sorry haven't read all the replys so if I duplicate ignor me, go for jeans that only have one line of stitching on the inner seam (wranglers) others have 2 lines (levis) can make all the difference, and wear them in before on the horse so they are a bit softer.

An old cowboy once told me to wear 'pantyhose' (tights) under jeans to stop the rubbing and keep warm, a slightly younger cowboy said 'you can fix anything with duck tape' and put a strip up the inside of my leg! stopped the rubbing though.

Or Jods work well :D
