i am jumping on a horse who carries his weight on the front instead of the back so as we approach a jump at a fast trot or slow canter he takes half a stride right before take off to set up his feet (which is good) but i end up looking like crap because it feels like a pause and i am somewhat jumping as he sets up.............. put if we canter fast then its fine but everytime we jump i dont want him to rush.....any advice, greatly appreciated!!

If you are ahead of him a little bit (which it sounds like you are, if you find yourself jumping before him when he takes the half-stride), then it will be harder for him to get off his forehand. Work at staying back, keeping leg on, and waiting for him to jump; just allowing him to fold you into position, rather than trying to make a big move into "jumping position."

From a more balanced position with your weight a bit more back, you'll also be in a better position to get more energy without necessarily increasing speed (in other words, get the nice bouncy canter you want). Try to get a good quality canter going in (sending him forward with your leg, but taking contact in your hands to keep him together) well before you get to the jump. As you approach, keep the thought of staying back and sending him forward with your leg. In the last few strides, just look ahead at a focal point and concentrate on sending him forward. Be ready to follow him, but let him worry about the jump itself.
