After reading Enlightened Equitation, I'm hooked on Classical riding. I'm thinking of buying Nuno Oliveira's book "Reflections On Equestrian Art". Has anyone else read it? Is it good? Any other recomendations of books on Classical Riding?
Thanx,
Jane :)

Some other books that I've read recently and can recommend are:
Riding towards the light - Paul Belasik
The Songs of horses - Paul Belasik
Exploring dressage technique - Paul Belasik
The truth in the teaching of Nuno Oliveira - Eleanor Russell
Dancing with Horses - Klaus Ferdinand Hempfling
Haven't read Reflections yet! Maybe let me know what it's like? :)

Reflections on an Equestrian Art is well worth reading, as are the three books by Paul Belasik.
In addition to these are:
The Dressage Formula - Erik Herbermann
Horses are Made to be Horses - Frainz Mairinger
Happy reading!

All of the books mentioned are excellent, Janey. 'Reflections' is full of gems, as are Nuno Oliveira's other books. There is a new one, more of a coffee table book of pictures, but again with a text of Nuno quotes which have hidden depths, whic is available only from compiler, Eleanor Russell in Australia.
Franz Mairinger's book is simply wonderful- a personal all time favourite of mine, and a book that should be read by horsemen of all disciplines. The philosphy throughout the book is of care and understanding for the horse, it is memorably funny in places, full of anecdotes about Mairinger's master, Alois Podhasky himself, and is a book that you coul dread again and again nd still find something new.
I also very much like Jean Froissard's 'Classical Horsemanship for Our Time', and also 'Basic Equitation' by Jean Licart, which was a teaching 'bible' for me from my early days.

Well, my books arived about a week or so ago. I really love Reflections, but the other book I decided on, Exploring Dressage Technique, well, I don't honestly like it! Sorry! I think it has some really good ideas, but he goes on about them so much that I get lost and confused and nearly fall asleep!
I have a book on special order at Amazon by Alois Podhasky. It's called The Riding Teacher. I can't wait for that one! I like the sound of Horses Are Made To Be Horses, that ones next. :)
God bless,
Janey

Sorry you don't like 'Expoloring Dressage Technique', Janey- it may be a little too deep for you yet. Paul Belasik is one of my favourites authors and trainers, and I am planning on having some training with him in the US next year. Read his book 'Riding Towards the Light' first if you want to read about Paul's odyssey in pursuit of Classical training, and his latest book 'Songs of Horses' which is a fictional collection of stories which is so esoteric and absolutely wonderful.
He is currently writing another book, I think due out next year. A couple of close friends of mine, one who has already been over to the Us and worked with him, are also hoping to get him over here next year to do a clinic.

Exploring Dressage Technique is by far the most technical of Paul Belasik's trilogy and focuses a lot on the biomechanics of high school movements such as piaffe and passage.. Come back to it later - you'll find a gem every time you do even if you aren't riding high school.
Riding towards the Light is a great read and very thought provoking. It is the story of Paul Belasik's personal journey on the road to "enlightened" equitation. The third book - Songs of Horses - tells stories about teaching and is beautiful.

Oops! I hope you don't think I was slagging Paul Belasik off! Like I said, he has some good ideas, but he is so long winded in his writing that I loose the plot! I mean, it's nice to know he lives in such a lovely area, but knowing that aint gonna do squat to make me a better rider! With the title Exploring Dressage Technique, I expected a more 'how to do' book, explainig and proving what works and doesn't work, and why. I think it's a bit too intertwined with his autobiography. But, I will come back to it later. :)
'The Riding Teacher' has arrived!! I haven't read much yet, but I like it a lot so far! I think it could have been written for me, since I want to be a Classical Riding Teacher (or more hopefully an Enlightened Equitation one! :D ). I'm taking all the BHS manuals to the local second hand book store!
Heather, do you have any info on how to get that other Nuno book from Eleanor Russell?
God bless,
The Painy One! :p

Eleanor's book arrived today! Wow! What an amazing book! I luuurrrrvvve it!
Anyone who hasn't got it, you are really missing out! It's quite expensive, but it is honestly worth it. And I got a doody lil' keyring and Eleanor had signed the first page of the book.
To those of you who do have it, just look at the photo of Balet doing half pass on page 45. :D Oh wow! That look in his eye... total peace and concentration. And that's a 3 year old!
God bless,
Janey

Janey, you've got to stop doing this. I can't afford to read any more of your posts this month 'cos I've spent far too much already on these wonderful book everyone keeps suggesting. Could you please not tell me about any more till after next Wednesday when I get paid?

Janey
How did you order your book? The website states price in dollars, what is it in sterling?
Thanks

If you pay by credit card through the website they'll convert for you. The exchange rate is in favour of the UK pound at the moment. Approx 2.90 Australian dollars to the UK pound. The book is well worth the money.

It worked out at nearly £40, but as Maria said, it is well worth the money! :)

Lucky you Janey, mine hasn't arrived yet, although I have already read a friend's copy! Well worth the rather high price- I think it will become a much sought after collectors book in years to come.

Sorry Ros, but since I get paid tomorrow, I treated myself to ordering another book! Dressage Formula. You are right though, I think I can't help myself anymore! My bank balance gets VERY low too just before the wonderful standing order god steps in and rescues me! ;)
Does anyone know what book explains all the rare classical movements?
