Hi all, I have recently taken up riding at the age of 25 having always wanted to learn. Now I am in the saddle I am keen to expand my knowledge as well as gaining experience in the saddle. I have recently fallen off a horse this however has not scared me in the slightess. I would be interested to hear from anyone who would perhaps like to give me advice and information. I am also seeking perhaps next year to get my first horse (once I have completed some basic courses so I know what am dealing with.)

Hi Emma :)

Welcome to New Rider! Everyone is very friendly and you'll soon find someone to answer any questions you may have.

I started riding when I was about 22 and it was the best thing I have ever done :D It is completely addictive! I've now been riding for about 41/2 years and am only just starting to look for my own horse. If I were you I'd buy Horse, Horse and Rider, Your Horse magazines every month (and to start with I found Pony magazine invaluable as it described all the basics adults are 'supposed' to know :o). I'd also watch as many videos as you can, read any horsey book you can get your hands on, go to as many horse shows as you can (as watching others ride really helped me spot what I was doing right and wrong!). You could also do the BHS Horse Owner's Certificate either distance learning or at your local college although I've never done it!

These are all the things I've done and am still learning :D

If you've got any specific questions don't be scared to ask them! Happy riding :D

Em :)

Hi Emma, welcome to the board! It's great to hear you are enjoying your riding? Are you taking lessons? I used to pick up a lot of things by hanging around at the stables before and after the lessons and talking to the other riders. You could also offer to help out at the stables and get some more experience to make sure you are ready for your own horse.
Oh and something else - you should post your treads in the appropriate sections of the board as you will get more replies there. This thread could go in "general" or "training of the rider". In "Help" we post only questions about how to use the board and not everybody reads this section. :)
