No efence Parise but with a jump that height if the horse wasnt happy it wouldnt do it, same with a 2foot fence, doesnt matter the height if the horse isnt happy or is in pain it wouldnt do it.
I think its an amazing video, what a horse :D

omg i cant believe the horse didnt refuse
Probably because he was enjoying his work :o I use to ride a horse who was jump jumps longer and higher (but smoothly) and tuck his legs up loads, he enjoyed it soo much he wanted to do it better as it was small....grrr never forget the time he took me over the wrong jump and turned out to me a 3ft6 spread with filler in the middle...grrr 13.1hh devil I called him

Yeah i agree on the point that if the horse wasn't happy he would definately refuse to jump...but doesn't this put a huge strain on his legs on the landing?? He kind of looked like he was going to fall over... :(

the horse looks young too. Miles too high in my opinion. No wonder the horse didnt refuse the way the man was beating him over the jump with his whip.
Not my cup of tea :(

http://homepage.mac.com/john.brian/Living-with-Horses/iMovieTheater43.html
It takes ages to load though!! I brought a book in here and read it while I waited :) It's worth it though, it shows the jump in slow motion and makes it look even bigger!!

Personally, I think it comes down to trust and willingness... if your horse really trusts you, there's no limit to what it will do for you.

definatley not my cup of tea!!!!!!!! if the horse trusted the man, why did he feel the need to belt it just before the jump ( it looked like it was going to do the jump any way). imo horses shouldnt be made to jump that high because they might be able to do it (or not in some cases) but they are putting trust in their rider to get them over the fence, and a horses confidence can be knocked tremendusly, not to mention the danger of damage that can happen to the horse or rider!!!! and before anyone says, i know that can happen in jumping competitions but there is more danger jumping something that high!!!!

In the long version it tells you that the horse is 16hh, 16 years old and thoroughbred...

7th Oct 2005, 08:57 PM
It is my understanding that the jump was 8' 2 and 1/4 inches.
And nobody can "make" a horse jump that high. The horse did it willingly.

I saw that video a long time ago and was amazed, but just watched the last couple of strides frame by frame. Watching what the horse does to prepare for the jump is almost as amazing as the jump itself. In even the penultimate stride, he has his hind legs all the way under his withers, his shoulders up, and his front legs almost propped out in front, as he changes the direction of energy from that big, gallopy stride to the enormously collected one he needs to jump straight up in the air.

Just a bit of trivia -
The current Puissance world record, held by Franke Sloothaak, is 7 ft 10 ins - that's only 4ins smaller than this jump.

17th Oct 2005, 07:30 PM
like cvb has said it was done in 1949!! they had diferent methods back tehn!
If the horse really didn't want to jump it, he wouldn't.
Why are you moaning about him whiping the hrose before the jump, yep ok it seems unessicary but its just a ack up, it wasn't done out of cruelty!

Simply awesome!!!!
That horse is unbelievable.
As for the rider I have to wonder, there is a fine line between bravery and stupidity, certainly wouldn't catch me doin that height hell I would be stressing at the thought of doing half that height.
Agree with others though the horse wouldn't do it if he didn't want to, however he did refuse the first time he was presented at the jump but cleared the next 2 times the clip shows the last time over the fence. He actually jumped it to the right of the fence and it was measured at 2.54m but for the world record it was taken at the lowest point in the middle of 2.47m. The horse died at the age of 29 and is buried under a permanant replica of the jump and he has a statue in his honour which I think is quite cool.

In the last couple frames when the horse is getting it's feet back under itself it looks as though it's about to take a little bucking spree lol. Like you know when you are on a horse that is just having a ball doing a course or a tight gym line and they like to put a couple of good spirited bucks in when they are having fun... thats what the horse looks like he is doing.

That horse is incredible. I just want to comment, if you watch the pictures of the horse jumping, his ears ARE pricked forward, and his face is lively, indicating he is not being forced to do anything he didn't want to. If he wanted to refuse like he did the first time he tried to jump it, he would've. But he didn't.
And the horse did refuse, they had three tries to get over it. He jumped the first time and nocked a rail, he refused the second, and the one on film is the one he cleared. The horse he was competing against, Chileno, tried to jump it, got tangled in it, fell, and was retired from jumping that day.
