View Full Version : Gloves?

I had a really tough lesson today, so little control of the horse...
The long story short is that I was pulling far too much on the outside rein, because he kept speeding up and up. Because of this excessive pulling, my ring fingers are completely wrecked. Each has a huge blister, which popped during the lesson, and they are so painful. Because of this, my instructor says I should get gloves. (And stop pulling so much on the outside rein?? )
I was wondering, then are there special gloves for riding, with grips or something? If so, around how much would they cost?
Thanks,
Claire.

yes there are special gloves for rideing, there are lots of types, rangeing from your £1 pimple palmed gloves to your £100 custom made leather gloves! pop down to your local tack store and ask them

The cheapo cotton ones (about £2) are fine but do tend to get holes in them. They're quite 'easy' to wear.
I like the Roekl XC ones (can't remember what they're called), they're under £20 and have lasted for ages :)

You will find the gloves will make a big difference. Much easier on the hands. Hope your fingers feel better soon!

I like the cheap 'fabric with rubber dimples' ones (£2 at my local store) and also the mountain horse leather with crochet backs ones - about £9?
Evelyn - the difference is mainly just that riding gloves are made to maximise grip and feel - not just to keep you warm like normal gloves. Woolly gloves are just too slippy for riding!

I always found that the £2.50 pimple gloves were fine until you get a really strong horse out on a hack or something whos constantly pulling, they tend to deform lol mine were never the same again! I have a woof wear pair now, they really nice but i find it hard to do anything apart from riding in them which isn't always great. Where I work they sell lots of the Roekl ones and ive tried them on and they're really nice, they also come in lots of sizes so you can get them to fit properly!!

I always ride in gloves. I can't really recommend any particular variety as I am always losing them so I don't spend much money on them! I guess that you would expect to pay about £10 for a decent pair.

I have always had the £2 cotton gloves, but yes they do get holes in easy and do stretch into funny shapes, but they're easy to sew up again and cheap enough to buy a new pair. But after wanting a pair of nice gloves for ages, I got three pairs for my birthday last week! I have some easy care "Grippies" which are lovely and sticky, some thin dressage-y ones which are frankly too big and too plastic-y (I don't have the heart to let the generous friend down though and not wear them!) and some Roeckl Chester gloves (not ridden in yet, but they feel fantastic, so thin and smooth!) I have some Musto fleece gloves for winter and they're quite good as my hands stay warm, although if you get stuck in a shower they don't dry out for ages!
But yes, gloves are highly reccommended for riding *and* handling, to stop you getting rope burns and blisters (but I still have hard bits on my hands where my friend's horse pulls, and from writing too much during revision time!)

i realy like leather gloves, ive got 4 pairs of them.
2 brown leather gloves bought at a show for £20 the pair!
1 dark brown leather golves bought for £25 at a show when i forgot mine!
1 doe skin soft leather custom handmade gloves that i got for a gift and only use for the show ring! i love this pair, ive ridden in blistering heat in them and not gotten sweaty, ive ridden in the rain and the reins havent slipped, they are wonderful.
i dont like pimple palm ones, even a cheap set of leather ones will last alot longer! they will also give you more protection on your hands and are less likely to slip

Must admit here that I go through gloves like water, especially the cheaper cotton versions with the velcro adjustable band on the wrist!!!! I have about a dozen pairs, none of which I can find when I need them!!! My favourite ones are my thermal Shires ones for winter, and my Mountain Horse crochet back ones for showing in. I would recommend getting gloves to ANYONE who is riding, as they save a lot of pain!!!!!

i only ever ride in the Woof wear gloves. i have the full finger ones for winter time (about £20 per pair) and the fingerless ones for summer (about £15 per pair). they wash and wear very well. mine have lasted me a good few years and are still in excellent condition.

My cheapo leather gloves last about a year! I only got rid of my last pair because the velcro came off.

I don't ride in gloves (unless jumping) because cheque has a very soft mouth and he goes into a light contact.
However, a week ago i rode him to a new stable (BAD idea) and he put on a brilliant display of bucking and kept trying to bolt, and my arms were aching like crazy from holding him and i got blisters on my ring fingers as well.
For comps/lessons/pony club I ride in the same gloves as the white/creamy ones in the picture. for everyday riding i use the (green) track ones.

I find that gloves, whether track or other, take a while to 'break in'.
I prefer the white gloves as they are thicker BUT allow more air flow and are more giving.
track gloves are AU$8.95, and the super soft touch gloves are AU$89.90 (I got them barely used off my trainer :p)

Thanks alot for replying to this, I'll take all of that into consideration, I'm going to pop down to the wonderful tack/horsey shop just down the road from me (yay, an excuse to go) either today, tommorrow or Wednesday.
I get to poke about in there for a while now, because I've been told to buy a stick as well. Yay, new stuff.

I wear a pair of black deerskin roping gloves which I picked up in the US for $32.
Brilliant for doing groundwork/lunging in too. Extremely soft, and needed no breaking in. I couldnt imagine riding without gloves on now :)

OH has Woof Wear ones which are very good, I have some Shires ones which are good and I have some black leather and string ones by Good grips? Anyway, am sure you'll find some to suit. I know what you mean about the blisters :p The riding school cob I used to have lessons on gave me segs on my hands - he used to pull so much - by end of lesson he would be hoovering the school floor :D

I got a pair of Airtic Fox (£10) ones from my local tackshop yesterday, they are made of pig skin and I tried them on around the house yesterday and although it was quite warm, my hands did not get sweaty.
However, I have not yet ridden in them.

I love my Roeckl gloves. They're made of a leather-like material which you can still wash in the washing machine.
Before I had a cheapo pair which fell apart very quickly.
Before I got the glove, I also got blisters, particularly from a certain riding stable Connemara pony who likes to pull the reins out of my hands so she can graze on hacks . . . the big moo.

Just to point out... the thing about getting blisters, is that your skin toughens up and you might not need gloves! I have callouses between my rein fingers- I guess that would bother some girls but I'd rather have tough skin than wear riding gloves in 90+ degree weather!

I went and poked about a bit in the wonderful tack shop downt the road from me today, and I got them! Yay.
I went for brown Roeckl "Light & Grip" gloves, which fit nicely, and a pretty "Old Mill" tan/beige/brown whip, which is lovely. So yay, more new stuff.

Love the new stuff as well!. Can`t wait to go to the Dublin Horse Show in August, I love looking at all the stuff and thinking "if I had a horse".
Are prices at stalls at shows generally cheaper than in tack shops or more expensive. How would they compare to buying online?
