Visit this site, there's loooooooooooads of different types of different types of cross country jumps. And there's loooooads more that exist too e.g. walls, ditches, tyres etc. And lots of course designers make up new jumps all the time aswell... there's some amazing ones that look like (or actually ARE!) cars, boats etc. XC jumps can look like pretty much anything, if you're inventive!

Only advice I can give is listen to your instructor. I've had 5 jumping lessons in my life, and from the second one until the 5th one (thursday) I've already gotten SO much better. It's all positioning in the beginning.
It may be just me, but taking jumps from a canter is worlds easier than a trot. I almost fall off from the trot (my teeny tiny mare appears to like going round the jumps rather than over) yet I do tons better from a canter. Maybe it's because she's so short that going from shorter trotting strides to the 1'6" jump is too much of a weird difference.
How did any of you really *know* that jumping was for you or not? I do love it, but I'm still not sure if I really want to leave my stable once this instructor is done in the winter. I love the way my western coach has taught me, and the fact that I can ride the way I want (BAREBACK!), and that at a jumping stable that probably won't ever happen. but then I turn on the TV to a Spruce Meadows competition..

I used to jump inches too, it just takes time. and like tim stockdale said it doesnt matter about height. all jumping is fun doesnt matter what height it is i love jumping 2ft more that jumping 3ft as its a lot easier and more comforting but hey you will get there. Just remember dont push yourself before you are ready. i used to do taht alot and make myself jump bigger becuase all my friends were and it never got me anywahere. all i did to get jumping bigger was find the best instructor and he bought me on. i remeber my first lesson i was soooo scraed and told him that my horse was scared of jumping fillers or coloured poles and that i would jump bigger then about 2ft. in my first lesson i jumped a double, the first part was a 2ft 9 fence with barrels ( and these were barrels that i couldnt get near when riding in the school) then the 2nd part was a 3ft spread with a big filler with the ace and dimonds on. And it took me 8 lessons after that so 16 weeks and i would jump kasey around any course of jumps. so my confidence was bought on through my instrctor. all my advice is find a great instructor, dont push yourself until your ready and lister and work on it i would jump those barrels everyday and eventurally we could jump one on there own no problem. Keep going and you will soon be at HOYS :D

I don't even remember my first jumping lesson :o I've been jumping for years, but I've never really enjoyed it or gone very high since the last few days. I've been at an eventing clinic with my gelding, cheque, and we've improved more in the past four days than in the past four months.
It's amazing, I've got the best instructor and she's been helping me massively getting cheque listening (he's a pro at jumping and thinks he can get around the course completely unaided  ) and getting my position up to scratch so i move with cheque and don't get left behind.
