I'm just home for a little bit now. He wasn't himself coming home from our ride today, but he's not really predictable. So I turned him out and went home for an hour. When I went back to feed him, he was rolling, and not interested in me arrived. I sprinted across the paddock and got him out and walked him. Rang home, and the vet was called. He's not a happy boy, but he has passed feces, and hasn't tried to roll right over again. He had a couple of shots, and I'm going back down in an hour and a half to check on him. His heart rates are normal, he sweated up badly, and kicked at his belly.
He's quiet now, and nibbling a little bit at what's around him.
It was -3 out there in the dark, still shaking from fright and cold.
I hate him not being right.

Oh, poor boy. Poor you too - it's horrible when something like this happens.
Hope the shots did the trick and he's ok now.

Thanks Chev, still shaking, don't know whether from cold or shock or both. Will keep you all posted on the progress.
Such a comedown after our nice ride out to the beach this morning:(

Probably both - I remember Gelfy colicking once out of the blue in the field, and even after the vet had gone and he was fine and grazing happily I was still sitting shaking.
Keep us updated.

Thanks guys. Chev, I'm glad Gelfy got through it ok! This is the first horse I have ever had ( mean in 13 years of riding) that has ever colicked on me. It's weird!
I want nothing more but to crawl into bed and get warm, but just having hot drink and thawing out until I have to drive back down in the frost to check on him again. (8:30PM now one hour to go)
So I'll just hang out on NR for a bit!

OK I'm back. He made a little nicker when he heard me in the dark, so that's a good sign, he's more alert. He's not making any indication whatsoever to his tummy. I caught him and brought him out into the lights. I can hear his guts moving, his heart rate is 38, and his gums are normal, when pressed, they go white and return to pink within 2 seconds. He tried a little nibble of grass out by the hitching rail, and I saw he had eaten most of the little bit of hay I left him earlier.
The signs are looking good, now just have to check him again in the morning! OK going to crawl into bed after another hot drink to thaw out again!
Thanks again for the support guys, it means the world :)

Cheers guys. I'm going down to see him again shortly, as apparently the drugs only work for about 12 hours. It's a white wonderland out there right now with frost!
I didn't sleep much last night, will hopefully catch up with an early night on Tuesday night.

Check this morning...
Very lethargic, but not worried about his tummy. Heart rate 38, gums normal, still hear gut sounds. Changed his rugs, that were stiff with frost, and gave him some hay. Mucked out this morning, and he is still passing feces, if small ones. Watched him eat, he ate slowly, just nibbling, but at least he is eating. He had a small drink of water too.
I took a couple of photos of him this morning, and what a frost!
When I arrived, he's actually interested in me arriving, which is a change from last night...

awww no. i hope cheeky feels better and gets back to his silly ol' self. its so scary when you are dealing with colic, i know! and people think we are silly when we say our horses are like our kids...i sure worry about mine like they were my child when they are sick like that!

I've just caught this thread. Thank goodness it sounds like Cheeky has been feeling better.
We had a little scare with Bud last year. Much like what you are reporting with Cheeky, he passed manure and seemed to be doing okay fairly quickly after the incident. Haven't had a problem since, but it was quite a scare when it happened. We never did figure out why. The vet thought it was a case of gas colic.

They really are like our kids, what would we do without them? Kedwards, I'm glad Bud was ok in the end, it frightens you out of your wits sometimes.
Christy, thanks! I loved that photo too, the paddock in behind his is quite cool, it's the only bit of hill in my whole area ;) Quite nice with all the bare trees, and white ground!
And he is better now. I gave him a tiny bit of feed tonight, with his hay. All signs are back to normal, he even followed me around a bit while I mucked out. 7 poos between 9am and 4pm today...not too bad. I gave him a good brush to get out all the dried sweat, and he even feels good enough to point out his itchy spots like he usually does. This morning he just stood there, being incredibly lethargic. He's getting his spunk back! :D

Good to hear. :D
It seems really weird to be looking at pictures with frost like that though - it's so hot here... we've had brilliant sunshine since about 5.30 this morning and it's just getting hotter and hotter. I'm wilting already!
Think I'd rather be out in the frost to be honest!

Until you have a week of it in a row, and even though you get a nice day out of it, when it thaws, you're still back to slipping around in the mud! ;) I miss summer, even though I'm doing all these rides to the beach this winter, I want to go swimming in the sea... sigh.
