I just did mine :D its fine! :p when you do it, offer your answers, be confident and theyll get bored of asking you and will ask more questions of the people who are nervous/less confident. All i did was read the book and was off, honestly just read that, learn your feeds, feet and the aims of the BHS and your away :D

Hi,
Noticed you left a thread about BHS Stage one. Wondering if you are able to offer me advise for example; when do you know you are ready to take exams and how did you get to know about them and involved. Just any info or advice would be helpful. sorry i couldnt reply to your strand... I hope you pass and as the other person suggested confidence in your approach - good luck

Riding wise, i had an assessment specifically for my stage 1 at my yard, with a BHS approved instructor and asked whether id be ok, she said fine, i could do my stage 2 aswell no probs. So go from there. Stable management wise, well i work at a stables, have a look at the sylabus on the BHS website and tick off everything you can do, if theres mostly ticks, id say just have a couple of lectures at a BHS approved yard to go over everything the BHS way, get the book and voila :D

All I can say is talk through all the practical stuff as you go. Voicing your thoughts as you go, then if anythings goes wrong the assessor knows the instant you think it is not right, rather than you blundering on in silence making the assessor think all is well. You can't do this with the ridden but for the HK&C you can. Also talkl through why you are doing what you are doing, it helps to keep everything clear in your own mind and this way you won't miss out doing an important thing.

Just wondering, on the BHS website it says, supporting or compulsary(sp?) well, what does it mean when it says supporting? Oh, and how hard is it?

I`m going to keep an eye on this thread as well as I am interested in doing stage one for riding and stable management. How many people do the test at once, I mean how is the theory and practical exam structured?.

Seen a lot of people say it's easy- does anyone know anyone who has failed and do they know why they failed?!!

I did my stage one a while back. The best thing to practise is saying things out loud. when you feel under pressure you can get tongue tied so practice.
You are split in to groups on the day. We were taken into a stable and asked to name points of the horse. We also had to apply a tail bandage. We had to groom and tell her what brush we were using and what it was for.
You get asked about horse health. eg Give an example of how you could tell a horse was unwell etc.
Examiner will go round the goup and ask everyone to give them 2 examples or so
The main thing is safety. they will be looking at how you approach the horse, when grooming mention that you would usually remove the water bucket, she will probably tell you not to bother but the fact that you mentioned it will show you are thinking. **take your gloves off when you groom!!!** as you groom feel the horse with your hand as though you were checking the horse over. and put effort into it. she doesnt want you to tickle it. Act as though you are actully doing the task for a purpose.
But it is simnple if you are prepared. Good luck
