Hey everyone, is there an appropriate way to salute? I seem to notice a lot of different ways of saluting, some looking really crisp and smooth, and some look like the person is checking their underarm deoderant.

Which one do you do, and what is the most commonly used one?

I think the 'hand to hat' is a military salute and only expected from riders in uniform. For dressage tests the one I do is the one where you bow your head and stretch out your right hand (to your side) but you don't raise it to your hat or anything.

For a lady you bow your head and lower your arm, for a guy you take your hat off and do the same, but with the hat in your hand. You can do it with either hand, but it you salute with your whip in the hand that you drop, you can be eliminated.

I've been taught right hand, bring it to your forehead really briefly and drop it to your side, drop your head while you do this.

For dressage we were always told that you first of all make sure that you've come to a complete halt, put your whip/reins into the other hand, drop your other hand down beside you, straight down, palm facing forwards (I think or it could be that your palm shouldn't face forwards ... there is a 'correct' way but I'm b******d if I can remember what it is  ), back straight and bow/nod your head only (no bowing from the waist). Men (if they aren't wearing a chin strap) may take off their hats when they do this but the 'normal' bow should be done rather than fiddling with the chin strap.
