Hi, heres my Highland!! He is just five and he was backed in March by me and my instructor. He has really helped my confidence no end and at the moment we are out and about doing a little dressage, and mum is finally getting her hacking courage back again!! :) Hopefully we will be showing next summer, but to be honest I just like being up and riding again.

Hi everyone else, I lurk often but rarely post, I love reading your threads as it gives me lots of advice and food for thought, its also nice to know there are lots of like minded people. ( in other words nervous nellies)

MadMum, you must let me know how the vetting went.

Hi Topcat,

He's gorgeous - well done you for backing him yourself (with a little help!). How satisfying.

hi madmum and topcat! your highlands are absolutely gorgeous! Do you know what bloodline they are from? madmum- your guy - or soon to be guy - looks very similar to my old highland, mine was from the clandon line. Except mine kept his dapples until he had to be put down when he was 9. Good luck to both of you - madmum with the vetting and topcat with the showing!

Topcat, he's lovely! :) Well done on backing him yourself, it must be so satisfying to know you did all the work that went into him being as he is, and you must have done a wonderful job, as you're doing dressage now!

Louise - Mine (nearly!) is called Oakcroft Talisker, and from the little bit of research I've done so far, the line is Oakcroft I think? Need to do some more digging around to find out more :)

Unfortunately the vets made a mistake and put the vetting down for next Wednesday, not today as I had requested. They admitted they'd made a mistake, and its now booked for tomorrow. Its so frustrating!! :o Another day of waiting!

Well not that breeding really matters that much, but he just looks so well put together, was just curious. The good old highland 'well sprung ribs' lol! Fingers crossed for you!

Sorry to hijack your thread with such a depressing topic! It was four years ago, in the june of that year our welsh sec a had to be put down with cushings and laminitus that wasn't improving and pedal bone shifting, and then the highland was put down a week before the christmas, totally unexpected, another horse kicked him and broke his leg. Then about three weeks ago my other horse was put down. Also kind of unexpected - he was fairly old about 19, perfect health until the start of the year and then we found out he had a condition which is kind of like irritable bowel syndrome, which meant he just couldn't absorb the nutrients he needed, his teeth started to fall out because of this, his feet fell apart, he fractured his pedal bone, did a tendon, found out he had navicular and subsequently had to be put down. So sad.
Are you having blood taken from your ned when it is vetted? Just to guard against doped horse (been there, been sold that!)

That's awful :( Poor you and poor horses. I'm really sorry. Is your Highland the only other horse you have now? I bet he gets loads of love, after all the grief you've been through.

Yes, I'm having blood taken - I thought I may as well, it was only a bit extra to pay on top of the vetting.
