Toby is incredibly itchy just now and i'm getting a bit worried its developing into a real problem :( he really scrubs the top of his tail on the wall, but i'm managing to keep this under control by washing his tail with a tea tree shampoo and applying Killitch, but now he's started rubbing his neck and shoulder. theres a huge bald patch on his near side shoulder, and a bald bit on the off side of his neck. can anyone recomend a good shampoo or cream that may help this? i've been told Camerosa ointment is good but i don't want to splash out on it for it to then turn out to be useless. he doesn't do the itching in the field (too busy eating  ) but overnight when he's in his stable. also, can anyone suggest a good fly rug that will not overheat him? being dark he absorbs the heat very badly and i don't want to cook him with a fly rug.

I think everyone seems to use the Boett rug for horses who are affected by the midges.
My horses has an itchy tail which I keep washing..this is working so far.He sweats even without a rug but most horses seem quite comfortable in their Boett rugs.

My friend's horse has little shelter in her field and doesn't seem to worry about looking silly, she is very happy in her rug!

our donkey has a boett which she wears continually and she never sweats under it, seems to keep her cooler. she obviously tends to have more coat than some horses.

my horses have masta and they tend to sweat a bit under them, but I think they wouldprobably be sweating anyway the way it's been.

avioud the rambo one iwth zips as it rubs easily and causes raw patches.

rambos are out coz they really don't fit toby. i'd love a boett but they are very expensive. but worth it if he's going to get all scratchy.

EDIT: anyone know of a place in the UK that sells the Cashel Bug Armour??

I got a buccas fly rug that wsa really nice, but my guys prefer to be irritated by the bugs than wear a rug it seems, they just wouldn't settle with it on (they weren't hot or anything) and seemed to spend all day trying to get it off.

I've been using Equine America's Itch No More, as it is on itchy bits - tails mostly and then you can dilute is and use as a wash, its meant to stop itching and repel the bugs and for the moment seems to be helping a bit.

The best thing I found was Equimins tea tree oil spray, seemed to really soothe but Bo hates sprays so it makes it difficult.

i'm not a big fan of fly rugs myself, but i guess it's a good idea if you have a horse that gets back fly bites, etc!

my gelding had TONS of fly bites over his neck and shoulder, then 2 days after i put him on garlic powder they went and he has had no more!

he's recently started itching his head and neck on the wall when tied up/indoors sometimes.. it may be the type of face wipes i got. maybe not as good as the others.
