Hi, just a short posting to ask if anyone has had their horse operated on at either Liphook or Newmarket, particularly for suspensory damage? I have visited Newmarket and it is pretty impressive, and a very tranquil place to be. The op doesn't worry me, but the general anaesthetic does, as my mare has some respiratory problems, that is, she gets quite distressed in Summer if the humidity is high etc.
I have talked to the Surgeon who would do the op and have every confidence in him, but I just wondered if anyone has experience of this op and what happened afterwards?
Many thanks

As you are in Surrey, I would be veering towards the place wiht the shortest journey time. If she doesn't travel well then Newmarket is quite a distance. We have an equine hospital in Arundel, West Sussex, just on our doorstep, and they can do most things there - they do a lot of tendon injuries due to Dunlops yard nearby.
There is also a good equine vet in Forest Row. I have heard of but don't know the one in Liphook but would give ours in Arundel 100% for their vets and their facilities.

If it cn be helped I will not send my horse to newmarket for treatment have known too many horses who have been screwed up in the head because of the handling they use there

Oh dear, not what I was hoping to hear about Newmarket not being the best place to send my mare, but thank you for taking the trouble to reply to my post. I'll have to think again, and have a long talk to my vet.
On a lighter note, it probably seems a pretty daft question, but is it safe to give horses carrots with all the foliage intact? I have asked a few people, but no-one seems to know.

The experience I have of newmarket is that a very docile mare went there with lameness in the back leg and came back vicious, apparently the first day she was there they had her in a chifney and were yanking it really hard to get her to respect them to this day 7+ years later she is still unhandlable by most people :(

I've had to take horses to Liphook on a couple of occasions. The April before last one had to stay for several days, he was well looked after and calm during his stay. The vets are some of the top in the country, their facilities and reputation are second to none. HTH :)
Sorry to hear about your mare and unfortunately I don't personally have any experience of the op.

We took Dev to Liphook in May and i couldnt fault them. Dev loved it there  He wasn't stressed and was so chilled out. We took him there for Colic surgery but luckily he didnt have to have it as he pulled through on his own :D I also REALLY wanted to steal their rugs as they were lovely!!

I have had horses stay at Liphook, and worked there over one summer, so have seen it from both sides. They are excellent and I would recommend them. They can get a bit heavy handed with naughty horses (not scared/nervous, the genuinely naughty ones) but they are there to do a job, not school people's horses for them. Nothing rough, and I wouldn't hesitate to send my horses there.
