Hi there, somebody at our yard recommended a hoof oil for OH's horses feet - his hooves look a bit worse for wear, because a few weeks ago he had to go barefoot whilst the farrier was on holiday  I know this didn't do him any favours - he's been shoed properly since, but they do look a bit naff. I have the hoof oil in the red bottle - but thats just for cosmetic use isn't it? Is there something that actually feeds the hoof??? I can't remember the name she gave me and I want to buy some. Any ideas folks?

Is it cornucresine (spelling?) by carr & day & martin? It's a sort of hoof ointment, it's really good for hooves. Or Farriers Formula possibly, which is really good for their hooves? Farriers Formula is a feed, I swear by it! My ponies have never had ANY hoof problems since being on FF!

I heard, but dont quote me incase Im wrong, that hoof oil - if used too much, is bad for the horses hoofs. I believe it is because it doesnt let any moisture into the hoof.
I use a sort of hoof moisturiser/condition by NAF. When I find the name I shall pass it on - although I dont really use it cos Stumps has brill feet.
Ive also heard FF is brilliant.

Hi,
My TB mare has brittle hoofs which is known for TBs has they have weak hoofs.
I telephoned my vet last week & he advised me to use FORMULA 4 FEET as it's the best to use.
May be you could try that too.

i've been told hoof oil is bad for feet. i can't honestly remember why, something to do with drying them out/the opposite?
the creams are better apparantly!
we use Kevin Bacon's hoof care stuff - it's a red tub - looks just like lard!
it keeps the wet out of the hoof as well as preventing it from drying out, also prevents and cures thrush.

I use NAF NAF hoof moist which is OK, but a friend at the yard has started using the Carr and Day ointment which Goldmine mentioned. Her horses feet have seen a noticable improvement, so I am off to buy some of that when my hoof moist runs out.

I use Hoof Moist too. I was told that cornucrescine was like a 'blister' so was a bit wary of using it.

I use hoof moist plus I would also use a hoof oil with laurel in it.
As far as cornucresine goes you use it sparingly along the coronet band and it promotes new hoof growth fairly quickly. Very good it is too although a little smelly and hard on your hoof brush!

My Farrier told me that hoof oil didn't do hooves any favors so I stoped using it a couple of years back. I have 2 seperate products that I use, one I used when our other mare had Laminitus or thrush it is called 'hoof disinfectant' & made by the makers of Farriers forumla, it's made with Tea Tree oil and other stuff. it helps hooves stay flexible, breath and retain their moisture ect ect, also good for white line desiese and any form of hoof damage, wonderful stuff, just brush it on. I have needed to use it again recently as my mare had developed a bad case of stress related thrush due to an absess on her heal. Once a day for a week and her hooves are clear. the other one they do which is simaler and more for maintainance is called 'the right step' not sure if you can get it in shops i get mine from www.equilife.co.uk or the Laminitus trust 0870 444 0676
:) Hope yr beasties tootsies are better soon.

hoof oil will dry a horses feet out. i stopped using it many years ago. i've tried several different hoof preparations and i've found the best to be Cornucrescine, Hoof Saver or Lidls hoof balm. the lidls stuff is actually really, really good. keeps bonnies hooves in excellent condition. the absorbine hoof cream is fab too but hard to get hold of in my neck of the woods. NAF hoof moist was the least effective, we threw our tub in the bin coz it wasn't making a bit of difference.

thank goodness I'm not the only one who uses the lidl stuff! I have the balm as well but haven't started using that because I haven't finished my hoof moist but the oil I use is the lidl one and it has laurel in it and doesn't seem to dry the feet out as much. Their fly spray cost me about£2.00 and is a million times better than anything else I've tried and I'm well impressed with their mane and tail spray too!
back to the topic though, if you want to promote a bit more hoof growth go with the cornucresine, it does exactly what it says on the tin!!
