i havent ridden in almost two weeks, ahem! first there was the tapeworm business which is now sorted and pony is well on the mend (in fact she was positively giddy today, wouldnt stand still, tried to leg it from the stable etc.). but now she has managed to (note: she was stabled rugless over w.end as it was too hot to leave the rug on in the stable) rub an area behind her ear almost raw :( she was drenched in flyspray etc but some stupid bug still got her. the riub is in such a sh... place that i couldnt even put antiseptic spray on it, so i have now applied a thick layer of sudocreme. and guess what, the raw bit is exactl where the bridle's headpiece would go :( how long will that take to heal? its not deep or anything, just a tad raw and sore. angel is not having a good week :(julia

Awwww - you're not having much luck, eh? :( How long it takes to heal will depend on whether she rubs that area again. When it starts to heal over, you could pad out the headpiece of the bridle with some fybagee or something similar to soften it and stop it irritating the area. But you must wait until it has started to heal up, or you will delay the healing process.

Hope you get to ride soon! ;)

i am sure she will do her utmost to rub it again, despite flymask etc. i wish thed have sticky plasters for horses! i also wish i had trained her to be ridden with just a rope round her neck :D but now would not be a good time to try that i dont think

Hope it heals over soon so you can get a bridle on - what a pain!!

My sweet-itch mare is stabled through the day and out of night so I have been fighting the overheating in stable problem and I have a possible solution that I would like to share.

I've only been using it for a week or so - so early days but fingers crossed.
I've taken all the rugs off during the day and put a FLY Zone collar. It just velcros round the neck only contains natural products (I hope...) and so far has worked brilliantly no face or mane rubbling at all. They also do leg bands which I am considering getting. You should be able to buy them at your local saddlers.

It is so nice to have her unrugged during the day at least

mine's usually out 24-7 with the rug on in the summer. as long as she has the rug and mask on shes okay. we had been doing ever so well so far. but5 those 2 days in the stable naked really messed things up a bit. its not just the bit behind her ear, but she has also rubbed skin off her nose :( i will try and get hold of a collar though, as the sound like a good emergency plan for stabling. do the break easily if pony gets entangled?
