Any of you have any tips on gettin Caspians mane onto the right side. I'm putting it in bobbles for the moment but he just rolls with them and they come out.
Any ideas?

Try doing a running braid on the correct side of the mane. If it slips easily on your horse, oddly enough, go for the hairspray.

Is there a right side and if so, why is it the right side and which side is that?

traditionally, (I believe) the correct side for a mane to lie is on the right because it's the off-side. Meaning that when the rider is tacking up, catching, mounting/dismounting, theres no mane to get in the way I suppose. If you were dealing with a wild mane I guess it would be easier to have it out of your face since the left side is the side a rider is almost always on when dealing with their horse on the ground.
some english shows prefer to have it that way. I'd rather have a wild long one though. If thick enough, I love double manes. :D
I don't think I would mind digging through this!

Sorry if it came across like that, it wasn't meant to. I had suspected that traditionally there may be a right side, but I genuinely didn't know. I tend to be a bit amuzed about all the nonsence that goes on in showing, but I mean no disrespect :)

For training a main to one side, I find that doing a lattice is great. Since the bands are connected to one-another, it hold the whole thing down to one side while it dries. No way of training it is a permanent solution, but if you band or braid regularly anyway, it will get so that it tends to want to stay on one side.

My YO keeps telling me Charlie's mane is on the wrong side. One day I put little plaits in his mane over to the "correct side" I don't think I left it in for long enough as it's going over again. Does everyone pull or trim their horses mane? I have a TB cross and I quiteliked the idea of just leaving his mane to grow but I don't want him to look untidy.

my highlands mane lies naturally on the left side. i have tried so many things to get it to stay on the 'correct side' but it just doesnt seem to work. i am just going to leave it on the left as nobody at shows bother about it and it is doing no harm on that side, :o

Love that pic Just.Jump! I've been told that Jake's mane and feathers were like that before he was clipped and hogged. Definately letting him grow out now! :D

Here's what you have to do:
Wet the mane and plait it (not rolled just plaited)
Leave the plaits in for 3 days
Then take them out,wet again and replait
Leave them in for another 3 days and then when you take them out the mane should be trained to stay where it should.

i shouldnt worry about it too much, its not that important unless ** doing 'proper' showing, local shows wont mind, iv found that it is very unusual that the mane stays on the right side anyway, my horsey shadow is the only one iv had that has his mane naturally flow on the correct side, all the others on our private yard too have their mains on the 'wrong side' they show and it causes nbo bother!!! :D

Sez, definately let him grow his hair out! Cobs looks soooooo much alike to gypsy horses if they've got the feather!
Laurenc, at my barn I think there has been one horse with a trimmed mane, but the woman used scissors and he looked terrible! Luckily, I think she's let it grow. Personally I hate short manes with a passion. Whats the use of short manes? Then the poor animal gets bug bites in the one place they can't scratch by themselves :p plus if I were a "show-person" I think I'd be pretty annoyed to have to spend all that time braiding, then show for about 5 minutes, and have to take them out only to do it again like the week after. I'd rather have that hair blowing past the horses hip!
Long hair on an english horse definately looks great, not untidy at all.

Much prettier than this, no offense to anybody who likes the short manes!

thanks for all the advice.
Casp's mane is on the 'right' saide halfway and then in goes over to the 'wrong' side. I wouldn't bother if it was all on one side but as I said we want to do some showing and were told we would need to see to his mane.
thanks again!

I'd give a lot to have a mane that splits down the middle! :D Ljósfaxi's mane does just that, and his name meand pale, remarkable mane!
Charlie Buttons's mane too goes down the middle to a great degree, it's wonderful, get him going in hanress with a breeze and he is stunning.
If your yard owner is worried about silly things like which side a horse's mane falls maybe she hasn't got enough to worry about! ;) ;)
Really there is a "correct" side, but there is also a "correct" side to get on, but really, in the great scheme of things does it really matter? For an exam okay, know the bull, but as long as you have a happy, healthy horse with a mane down the middle what moe do you want?

To add to the confusion it used to be believed that mare had manes to one side and geldings/stallions to the other :D
Unfortunately I can't remember which was which so I suspect it really doesn't matter :D

There used to be about a million things that people cared about regarding how they or their horses looked, which doesn't effect anything but prissy judges marks
For example, english cantle for men is supposed to be the square one and for women is supposed to be the round one. How dumb is that?

:D :D never heard that one before!, maybe it is to flatter the different shaped bottoms, like quarter markers on a horse. Do you suppose the judge gives marks for the rider's bottom!
I'd win every time if it was on size!

i like the short manes on fine horses and longer manes on cobiey horses but short manes look better if they are pulled not cut beacus when pulled it looks more natural lol

I still prefer a long mane on just about any horse- excluding the horses that have very thin manes. We have two mules, one is fairly bald when it comes to mane and tail so her mane is cut short to stand up :D we also had a classic bald appy, and IMO we should have cut it short like that or just shaved it off completely. I'm a natural girl, and as pretty as plaits can look all done up, a pulled mane doesn't fit the picture of a horse to me! If anything, the super short manes remind me of spartan-type horses. :p
Wally, maybe the square cuts ones are for men because they generally are bum-less? Maybe the round cantle flows better with the general round-bummed female! :D Embrace the bum and stick it in a round-cantle saddle! ;)

Jake was bred by gypsies, and so has been trained for driving. We're hoping to be able to buy a Romany-type caravan in time for next summer and go on holiday round the Lake District with him. Will look great once all his hairy bits have grown out :D

I have a little pinto "Choco" who's mane falls on both sides although his mane falls this way because it is a little thicker at the top than the bottom. I like his mane long :) and also he has had his mane over pulled before so he was altra sensitive to it, so I simply parted his mane down the middle and shaved on the inside so no-one could see in the thicker part and now his mane looks the same thickness, falls to one side and he doesn't have to go through someting he obviously felt uncomfortable with. He's a happy, beautiful pony.

Quik-Braid (you can get it from Georgiegirl on Ebay) is very good for laying a mane, it's also GREAT for plaiting.
Saffs does the mohican and it's helped a lot. You've got to be careful about horses that rub, though, otherwise you'll end up with handfuls of mane coming out when you take the bands out.

Dottys mane lies on the left hand side - there is nothing that I can do to make it lie on the correct side as it just won't stay there. She would rub any plaits out that I put in. I don't really care anyway - I am just pleased that her mane has grown so much this year after being hogged in February and she is a sweet itch sufferer.

Before Kina had her foal I used to do her mane Fjord style properly, I let it grow out when she was pregnant, now she has a full mane nobody will let me cut it Fjord style properly. Fjord hogging makes it stand straight up, neither to the left nor right. As it is now she has a perfect centre parting!
If I show them in harness Mother and daughter, they will have to be hogged again!

Apparently, all manes are supposed to lie on the right hand side and I've been told that this comes from the days of soldiers that carried swords.
Soldiers carried their swords on the right hand side and the idea was that if the mane lay to the left, as the soldier reached over with the left hand to grab the sword, they could end up grabbing a lot of mane on the way over. Or at least, it would get in the way. Whereas, if the mane is on the right, it was out of the way.
This is also the reason that we mount from the left hand side too (apparently!).
But that is just what I've been told by a local historian/equestrian person.

Well, horses used to be only used by the military, so thats where alot of this stuff comes from. Donno who's weird idea it was to get gorgeous manes all chopped up and braided into gumball braids
