Well having read the comments on my other thread about the EquiTrek trailer, which I also read to my partner we have decided to go for a horsebox, he has amazingly agreed to sell his car and get a small run around and I can have what money is left for a box. I think I will have about 6k with our savings as well. I am still really worried about buying an older box which will be all I can get for that money. I am wondering whether I should top that amount up with (another  ) loan and get a newer box may be a rear facing 2 horse box which will not need to be plated and running costs will be lower (if that is correct?) On the older models, is there anything to avoid or try and find? Does anyone know of a horsebox dealer, the ones I have found don't seem to have the lower level lorries, I would feel a bit better if I could buy from a dealer and may be get a warranty. Any advice would be gratefully recieved, it is a bit of a daunting thought :o

What a great fella your partner is! Treasure him! I think a horsebox is a lot
more practicable and safer than a trailer. I've had several of both and a
lorry is much more use (and fun). Don't be in too much of a hurry to buy
though, just put the word out and one will come. I suppose it's like all things-
you buy in haste at top price, then see all the bargains appear.

Hey great news!

From what you said on your last thread, then a lorry would probably suit better, especially if you intend doing a lot of travelling long distances to shows etc.

Don't know much about lorries and what to avoid, but if buying something very old, need to consider the availability of parts. HAve heard of a couple of people who've got lorries on chassis that are about 20 years old, and have had trouble getting parts when things do go wrong.

As others have said look about in the ads to see what you get for your money, if there are any dealers go look, it can't hurt to see what is around. It's harder with lorries as they are 'custom' made on a lorry chassis and vary so much! Take your time and you will find the perfect one.

Good luck

Thanks nicolaj :D I have managed to find a localish dealer who does all sorts of trailers and lorries, I called her to enquire generally and she said to make an appointment and she will go through all the pros and cons for boxes and trailers and towing weights etc, she was really nice and even when I said I didn't have any cash to hand at the moment and didn't want to waste her time, she said no problem come and have a chat :D We need a jumping up and down excitably smilie :o

Cool :D

At the end of the day the dealer wont see it as a waste of time, from her point of view if you get on and you like her you may go back when you've got your cash. She may also have some second hand part-x in, in the future which could suit your budget and requirements.

Sorry for stupid question but ... but a lorry is a truck, yes? so what is a "box"? It it also a truck? How is a box different from a trailer?

Box (horse box) is the same as a lorry :)

mayS-a lorry is the same as a truck- a horsebox is a horse adapted lorry -and
a trailer is something towed behind a vehicle, usually a car or a 4x4

Sorry, I can't recommend a horsebox dealer but I can advise you to steer well clear of Horsemaster UK Ltd who are based in Norfolk.

The company is well known by the trading standards department for selling Renault two horse rear facing boxes in a dangerous condition.
