Could anyone give me a helping hand in how to do dressage plaits or have any websites that explain? also, for prelim dressage would you plait tail or not plait tail?

Mane is plaited exactly the same as for any show. (Rubber bands are OK, doesn't have to be sewn).

Tail can be unplaited or plaited at any level. Mine both compete upper level with full tails. TBH plaited tails are increasingly the exception rather than the norm in dressage.

i can't think what plaits you are talking about?! perhaps usual "ball" shaped plaits with ribbon in?

I presume you mean the plaits that sit at the side of the neck rather than on top. You plait in the same way as you would for normal plaits and finish just before the top of the neck instead. You finish off the effect by putting white tape or the dressage bands you can buy around them.

Fold the plaits instead of rolling them, produces a more sticking out effect, then you can put tape/bandettes on.

Also, you plait upwards, over the horses crest not down towards the hooves, then fold. White tape/bands completes the effect.

Dressage plaits are meant to sit on top of the neck - the same as you would do with a horse that lacks topline. Hunter plaits lie alongside the neck.
