This thursday im getting my farrier to put stud holes in her shoes.

he said bring up some cotton wool to plug up the holes. just wondering does it ever fall out? Say in the field?

also he asked do i want one or two on each shoe. front and back feet? or just the back ones?

The reason for me getting the studs is that my pony slips very badly whilst juping or turning on grass. Ill be cantering towords the jump and her back end just goes/slips from under her on the bends. It's quite scary but shes never actually fallen over yet.

any advice wold be apprecialted. Thanks :D

Ps i already have a stud gard for my girth

2 in each shoe. Soak the cotton wool in oil (hoof oil) and plug them. They dont normally fall out. :)

I use 2 in each hind shoe if jumping but 2 all round if doing dressage on grass.
Just don't like front studs for jumping due to risk of additional leg strain.
Cooton wool as per casey. You can also get rubber bungs or pre made cotton ones to use instead. Ask your farrier for a spare nail or 2 as they are great for removing the cotton wool and cleaning the thread.
Dont get the grub screws that are available. The heads wear on the road and become impossible to remove.

i found the cotton wool ones a pain. they were always coming out. you can get little rubber plugs that were much better.

I don't plug mine - just scrape & tap the holes out when I need them

Echo david about front studs - I wouldn't use them unless the front feet slipped a lot.

Thanks guys!

2 more questions do you think that i should buy one of those stud sets with lots of differant types of stud and plugs.

also can you walk on concrete, say out of the car park to the show rings with the grass studs on? ;)

Great advice. o.k, so two stud holes in each foot only put studs in the back whilst jumping, on all four for dressarge on grass. no grub screws, got it.

thanks again! :D

You can but I wouldn't advise it. It would be like the horse is walking on heels.

I don't know of many show centres with concrete car parks - sometimes they are hardcore which the studs will sink into anyway. If the car park is concreted then walk over to softer ground as soon as possible.

sorry, i said concrete, it's hard core. It looks like i'm going to have to put the studs on whilst i'm on the grass just before i'm going to enter the ring.

I've had a look ot some of these packs that you can get the studs ARE MASSIVE big pointy things shurly i dont need them. I just want her to stop slipping.

Is there a standard size of 'thred/hole'? I just dont know?

i livery at the yard where the show is held and have to walk quite a way from my stable on concrete before i get to the 'hard core car park'.

how long does it take to put the studs in?

Oh i am such a novice. there i sooo much to learn and all the time i keep thinking 'what if' studs just make it worse, what if she gets tendon damage because i didnt know somthing that i should have?

sorry for the wall of questions and thanks again for answering them. :D

No, don't buy a stud kit. The reamer (thing used to clean / re-cut the thread) that comes with these kits is generally pants. Far better to buy the studs you want and a decent reamer.
Stud holes are standard 3/8 UNF.
If you are using reasonably short studs and have them in both sides of the shoe then a short walk across concrete will not cause a problem. If you only have 1 stud in each shoe or studs of different length in the same shoe don't walk on concrete.
I generally use a long stud in outside of shoe and shorter stud on inside of shoe to reduce risk of damage id the horse strikes in to itself.
The softer the ground the longer the stud needed.
I can generally do 1 stud in about 90 secs including cleaning/tapping the hole but it does take practice.
Did i miss anything?

nope! :) i feel much better. but (why doest there always have to be a but  ) does it men that every time i were studs i need to put boots on my pony?

That would mean that i could only use them in classes where boots are 'permitted' and i want to use them in all my classes.

when you say resonaby short how short do you mean?

Thanks for replying

If you cant wear boots then either go for 1 stud in outside hole only or short stud in inside hole (short = max 15-20mm)
If your horse moves very close behind then be careful what studs you use, the blunter the better.
