We did our first ever show on sunday in the novice showjumping and my girl and i managed 5th :D I don't usually sound off like this but i am so chuffed i needed to share it as my unhorsey friends just can't understand why i'm walking round with a huge grin on my mush.
I nearly didn't do it as my nerves nearly got the better of me but a friend told me to take a deep breath and that i'd kick myself if i didn't go in there.
They had a bloody treble as the second to last fence though which made me realise i hadn't done any gridwork for about 6 months :o And they had a wall, which i've never even come across before. I just missed out on getting in the jump off as i only had 1 run out at the wall (my fault not hers) and nothing down so all in all my ned earnt her keep :p Nearly missed the last fence as forgot it was there.
Can i just ask though, what size are novice fences supposed to be because after doing the course one of the people told me the majority of fences were 2"9.

Well done!
Those jumps sound pretty big, also its a bit mean to put a wall in a novice class too! But you did it, big well done for you!

To be honest i just walked the course in a daze and didn't look at the height of the jumps until afterwards. I'm proud of us both and really enjoyed it but i don't think it'll be taking over from happy hacking just yet :D
I think the lady who does it isn't the most experienced as i've been on foot before watching and the course had ridden quite badly. I had said to myself that if the course was that tight and awkward that i wouldn't do it as it's not fair to ask my gangly 16.1 tb to try and do pony turns. Luckily it was well spaced if a little big. :o

novices vary so much. when i was in PC, novice could mean 1ft9 or 2ft9, seemed to depend on the course builder! generally on our local show shedules they have novice down as max2ft6 but its often bigger than that. you should always be jumping a level higher at home than you would at a show, i jump- inter/open height at home but stick to novice at shows til Toby has more confidence (coz he's a little worry bug :p ). but british novice (affiliated) is 3foot, going up as you get through the rounds.
well done on getting 5th. its so hard to conquer nerves, thats my major problem. horsey can do it, owner isn't so keen!!!

Aye that's the usual case with us all i reckon :) Deep down i know my mare can do it, it's just hard getting to the point where you trust not only her but yourself as well. She's only 7 so just sometimes and i mean very rarely she has the odd day where she acts like a hormonal brat and i was really worried that it would surface on sunday  I'm the worrier i'm afraid not her.
