I currently do working hunter in the summer, but I have always had a bit of a fascination with what hunter trials are, could someone tell me exactly what it involves? Is it just like a 'cross country' (can't think of any other term!) phase or is there any more too it? Also is it normally done in autumn? I also seem to struggle finding places that hold these competitions in the lancashire/manchester so haven't been able to watch one yet.

I think hunter trials is basically like crosscountry but you have to open gates and things, like you would out hunting.

It is basically XC but most will also have a timed section usually involving knock down Working Hunter type fences then either the fastest or the nearest to an optimum 'Bogey' time will win.

If you have a look at www.ridingdiary.co.uk they will have a list of all the events coming up in your area. Charity Farm at Wrightington isn't too far from you and seem to have them reasonably regularly
