Hi I'm in a bit of a quandry about livery still, I have my horse on diy which suits me but I cant have winter turnout 24/7 which I would like and cant seem to find a suitable livery yard local that does it, or the ones that do it are too expensive, it is beginning to get me down a bit :( as I feel there are many nights in the winter that horses can quite happily live out with an adequate rug on.
I am going tomorrow to see yet another yard I think I have been to dozens, this one has all year turnout :) but is about a 40 mile round trip :( and hubby thinks i'm mad saying its too far away and of course the cost diesel as well, I really dont know what to do I mean the place I am at just now is lovely but for six months he has to be stabled at night, its not just the mucking out the price goes up £15pw as well :( .
I am also going to see a place at the weekend that is just grazing about 8 miles away no stable unless the farmer lets me make one in one of his sheds, but there is only one other horse there and no school its not really ideal but I just dont know what to do.
H E L P I think i'm going mad

Where are you in Edinburgh? We're also struggling to find a good yard near us - at the moment we keep ours in Fife. What yard are you at at the moment? Edinburgh Equestrian in Dalkeith (www.edinburgh-equestrian.co.uk) is supposed to be good - I think Pink's Lady recommended it; and Swanston Farm (off the bypass) is another possibility (it does have a website but I can't remember it.) Hope that helps! :p

swanston has a waiting list & ppl dont leave in a hurry, tower is very ££££ for grass, not that the horses have any grass
most yards are diy now which is harder,
i know of a field to rent but no stables, you could build a shelter if you wanted as we were going to but you would have no school :(
yards do cost more for these things

Hi have been down to see EEC its only five minutes down the road from me and I really liked it, but everyone I have spoke to about have gave me negitive stories about it even my instructor and farrier :( I just dont want to move him to somewhere where he will be shifted about willy nilly :( Swanston looks nice but its too near the bypass for me, where can you hack?
Fizz the field idea sounds good but he needs company as he gets stressed on his own :(
Its just a no win situation I think, dont know what to do for the best

swanston has the whole of the pentland hills to hack, + you can cross the road & hack around morton mains or go the other way to loanhead.
there is a field coming up in penicuik with ponies on the other side,i am looking at it for my 2 girls so would have space for a 3rd?

Hello I haven't forgot about you! I'm waiting on my reliable  friend to get back to me about this yard in Dalkeith. I think the other place we spoke about you know just the field may not be suitable as don't think there is any storage for feed and tack but let me check. I'm seeing my friend tomorrow so I'll kick her behind and mail you over the weekend (maybe Sunday)
Speak soon :D

Thanks Lauren :D
Fizz that might work if you dont mind a gelding in with your mares although he is fine with mares, the place I bought him from there was just him and a mare in the field, thats why I cant understand how he gets so stressed on his own as he was ok at his last place or so they said.

Just back form the livery I went to see this afternoon and its very nice, its a small yard with nine owners and hundreds of acres to hack, the stables are all under cover and a small sand school plus a indoor lunging area, but the best bit is all the horses live like horses and stay out 24/7 all year yipee :D
Now I have to have a long think about the distance it takes about half an hour to get there from my house and is 19 miles there and back, they do assisted diy as well so if I could not make it up at least he would be seen to :D

Hi there.
Have you tried pentland livery centre. Its just near Swanston 5 mins from the bypass. There is also a DIY place just past the Dalmahoy country club entrance, although that might be a bit far for you if you are near dalkeith. Its a farm. Not sure if they have winter turnout though i am afraid. Vogrie equestrian that looks like a nice yard.

Sorry. i wasnt sure . It does say contact them for DIY on there web page though. maybe it would be worth a call.
I have been looking at livery yards with a view for next summer when i buy a new horse. I live just at ikea sort of way but we are moving to west lothian direction at the beginning of next year. So i will be on the lookout for a yard that way.
Good luck and i hope you find somewhere suitable.

You need to consider the extra cost to your horse keeping budget if your horse is a long way away. Also if things go wrong and you are sent for in an emergency how long would it take you to get there

I've had horses at Edinburgh Equestrian Centre for about 5 years now and i think it's great. The owner of the yard doesn't move the horse's groups that much, she does move them if they are being bullied or depending on what type of horse you have. I've got a highland pony and so he's kept with a group of "good-doers" that she keeps on the grass that's not so good and the horses that don't live on fresh air she puts on good grass.
In the 5 years i've had them there she's only ever moved one of mine into a different group so that he'd be given hay over the winter and after that he was moved back with his pals. There's tonnes of hacking, you never need to go on a road and there's quite a few wee shows and stuff as well. You should speak to some of the liverys 'cause it'd be a shame to pass it up just because of what people who don't keep horses there say. The horses always seem very happy there.

Hi again to those I havent chatted to for a while. I know this is an old thread but as someone has brought it up again I thought I'd post on it too. Apart from Vogrie, EEC, Cousland, Oxenfoord, Temple, Mountskip and all those round the bypass....... does anyone know of a good farm/yard that is horse friendly and does 24 hour turnout all year round without paying a packet?!? You never really get to know about the smaller set ups without word of mouth but from experience these can be the better option. I'm looking for a change of scene in either Midlothian or East Lothian - any opinions would be nice ;)
