I've just started hacking out someones horse for them and yesterday the owner told me that the one I was riding was slightly arthuritic.
It didn't seem to affect the horse but I don't know anything about equine arthuritis.
Does any one know anything about the disease, how you treat it and how it affects the horse.

Hi, It would depend how badly arthuritic the horse is you may only have to warm up the horse a bit more or avoid overloading the horse with work, If it was really bad you could give some bute but it sounds pretty mild.
Good Luck-Chrissy:)

my horse is arthritic she has 10% reduction in one of her legs,as she has a broken knee, and maybe slightly in her other legs. it is a break down in the tissue, the vet told me that if a horse is not showing signs of arthritis by the age of around 13 he is not likely to ever have it. i warm her up more than other horses and she can not jump as high as what you can with other horse we jump no more then 2 and a half foot, as it puts to much stress on her arthritic leg.
i give my horse codlivine supple joint and cider apple both things that help she is not bad enough to have bute, a copper band around the foot is meant to work well.
a arthritic horse will ofter show signs by stiffening up after rides or before, they often can be a little more unsteady on their feet and are more careful, this is not all of them!! some are still just as mad!!

my pony has athritus and it doesnt affect her at all, apart from ometimes she is slightly stiff and lame after coming out of the stable, which is always better once she has walked around a little while. She does not need bute, and I dont give her cod liver oil or cider vinegar.
