On Sunday I intend to have my first go at doing the riding club horse class. The problem is I don't have a clue as to what to expect. I presume there will be a jump which I gather is usually up to 2'6 but what exactly do I expect in the ring. I intend to wear my blue jacket with blue showhat, white jodphurs and long leather boots. My horse will be in a baucher snaffle and all his tack is black. I usually have a numnah underneath so is this acceptable? I gather that I need to plait his mane and pull his tail is this also correct? I am soooo nervous because I have never done any showing classes at all. It is only a local level class but it is a fairly big show. Also he has got a couple of small splints and a small scar on the inside of his near fore. How do I cover the scar up and will he be marked down for the splints?

I did a riding club horse class today, your turnout sounds fine. We walked, troted and cantered round as a group the got called in in any order, and we were asked to do a short individual show, including the jump at any time. The judge asked what we did with the horses, and that was a bout it really.
There was a really mix of horses though, a gorgeous welsh, a show pony, a few general all rounders and 2 tiny ones :).
The horses had to be in snaffles, but that was all that was said about tack :D
edited to add- if your going to use a nhumnah try and get one the same colour as you saddle and closs cut as possible.
hope this helps

its usually acceptable to waer a numnah , your gear sounds fine
you will usually be asked to do the jump from both directions & often in both trot & canter
some competitors will do a rein back , or turn on forehand in their individual show , but i wouldn't bother if you are nervous that you might mess it up
the idea is to show each of your paces on each rein your horse be obedient & well mannered

if i'm being nitpicky, then you would ideally want cream, beige or canary breeches rather than white, which are more for SJ. white will do for local level, but cream is better if you have them. also make sure you wear shirt and tie, not a stock. This page (http://historicalfact.com/~es/horses/showing/what_to_do_ridden.html) tells you what happens when you get in the ring.
yes plait, if you don;t want tto pull his tail for just the one show then plaiting is fine for a lcoal show. the higher up the levels you get, the more out of place plaiting looks, but fine for your first class.
what colour is he? you can get makeup for disguising scars, or use boot polish in the appropriate colour, as long as they're not open.
