OK just trying to submit my entry for my first competition and I cant work out the following :
Am I open or restricted - and whats the difference?
Class A or B?
Age of horse - he turned 8 in June but doesnt it go from 1st Jan, in which case is he 7 or 8?
Where do I send the entry form? To BD or to the venue?
Breeding details? How much do they want to know?
I know I can be dense but I really can't find the information on the website!

You are a restricted rider unless you have BD points at the levelabove the one you are entering.
Only TB's have birthday on 1st jan so age is as at time of entry.
Breeding just what you can give them easily.
Entries are returned to the sec of the comp

so are there 2 classes then - an open and a restricted, ie scored seperately?
Rule book says that the age of horse is taken from 1st Jan in the year in which it was born?

yep, two sperate sections (same judge) scored individually with individual placings for qualifying purposes but they are combined for overall placing to decide prize money. So you could be first restricted and 5th overall for example
Sorry, didn't know the age rule as don't delve in to BD that deep. Guess he's older then.

With respect to A or B rule number 22 refers:
"All classes at an affiliated show including preliminary will be affiliated classes.
Section A of Preliminary Classes are open to anyone, member or non-member,
registered or non-registered horse, horse not to have gained more than 37
points.
Section B of Preliminary Classes are restricted to those who are eligible to
qualify for the Regional Championships/Semi Finals, i.e. members of BD, riding
registered or unregistered horses, who are Group 7 or 8 and horse not to have
more than 37 points.
Preliminary classes carry no grading points. Preliminary non-qualifiers are
open to members or non-members riding horses with less than 37 grading
points. All horses competing at Preliminary level (Section B qualifiers)
require a Preliminary ID number which can be obtained free of charge from"

if you're doing prelim then A and B applies, not open or restricted. you can only be open or restricted from Novice upwards.

If you are entering the prelim you should really enter sec B as you are eligible to qualify. If you haven't got your numbers back just put on the form 'applied for'.
You will be rider group 8 (no BD points at any level)
Entry form goes back to secretary, don't forget your cheque and SAE.

Whats the SAE for by the way Lgd?

Various reasons - in case entries are full and they can't take you, if you want to leave before the classes they can send sheets on to you at home. Most organisers put them out for you to pick up if they are not used.

got my pack through this morning, very exciting! Even a little BD badge in there. Are you supposed to wear this in competitions or would that be considered (as I think anyway) ever so slightly naff?

The juniors tend to wear them but the rest of us old fogies don't tend to bother
