Hi, I've just gotten my first 2 miniature horses Sunday. They are so cute and sweet. I was wanting to get some information on how to train them to drive.
The one is a mare who is 14 years old and the other is a gelding who is 9 years old. Now I know that a dog is never to old to learn new things, but what about horses? Would the mare be too old to learn to drive?

Anyway, what would be the best way to go about training them. Any book recomendations? or websites? Were would be the a good place to get a harness and cart. I'm not looking to compete, just something fun to do my new little pets.

There is no upper age for breaking to drive - the little mare should be fine. Have only got a moment so haven't time to answer the other questions, but I am sure the other drivers will answer in more detail for you or I will later:)

you really need to know how to fit the cart and harness to the horse to the benefit and welfare of the horse. Can you find a reputalbe trainer in your area,

Go to the British Driving Society website they have some links to American sites and Associations.

Any book by Sallie Walrond is good, as are the Allen Photographic guides.

My old stallion was trained to drive in his early teens. He was a star, you'd think he'd been doing it all his life.

You need a cart with lightweight, purpose built wheels, too wide and they'll be too much drag for your minis. The seat height must be right for you too, too little leg room and you'll get back ache.

How big are your mini guys? then we can give you some idea where to look.
