Haha ok, so my title had little reference to what I need to yabber about here.

Well ,as you all know, I have taken the task of bringing a mare back into work after 2 years with my friend. Lemme just give yous a little 'update' on what has happened.

Ok, so on Sunday we went to see her - not the killer mare i remembered!! She was nice *enough* and walked quietly to the house (which was about 10 min walk accross paddock, then 10 mins up road), I let my friend lead her through the paddock and half way to the house -I wanted to step down a little and let my friend have the time with her, as I have other horses I can see during the week, but she doesnt-. when we got to the house, I was leading her, there were dogs barking and chasing her - not a flinch!! There were cows Mooing - nothing. There were cars and a truck - nothing. Just kept walking - you do not realise how comforting that is lol!!

But when we got to the post, she went a little nuts, as she isnt as keen on with donkeys - but she knows these Donkies quite well and was a little excited to see them. Anyhoo, we took her into an enclosed paddock (brilliant size - like a very large arena . . . this is where we will be riding her laters -i think) and let her go. She bolted about, bucking and rearing, and farting, and screaming, and going around in circles - all on the right lead of canter :P

She carried on like this for about 10 mins, which was cool, as it was new to being away from her herd (of 2 others lol!) - plus she was helping us by getting a little exercise. After 10 mins she was coated with sweat - drenched!! Seriously! She then carried on the other direction (correct lead lol!), ducking under trees, turning the corners nicely, tail up - and her legs . . .I almost died they were BEAUTIFUL! The way she picked them up - perfect!! After half hour she calmed down, ate some grass, had a drink then her owner moved her into the stable. Again, another little run around, but then she was cool.

I then went in, did a little exercise to get her respect (simular to join-up, just not as long and has less stress on the horse), then I turned around and she hung her head, licking n chewing and my friend was amazed!!! So she had a go too, but didnt quite get it right, but it was ok, as she is new to this but she got it in the end!! She was so proud :)

Then we groomed her, gave her a quick hose off . . . then my friend said "lets cut her mane!!" I said "why on earth would you wanna do that?" she said "Coz its all scrawny and looks tatty." I said "I love this natural look". she gotta little annoyed, grabbed the scissors and said "well at least trim the tail." I said "why?" she said "Its dragging on the floor" so I said "Ok - just a little bit!" I put my hand under the tail to elevate and she cut it. Excuse me for being annoyed, but she cut about 4 inches off!!!! It now looks really odd coz the tail (which she didnt bother to comb out) is cut, but the mane isnt. I personally only like the mane and tail cut if you going into showing - but she looked so elligent with it tatty - it was . . . natural.

Anyways, we finnished up there. she said "there - doesnt that look better?" I said "Uh not really - here please let me cut it straight."
So she put her arm under the tail, and just as she got comfy - the horse farts/craps all over her arm - boy that was PRICELESS!! The way she lept backwards was amazin! she said that she will never do that again, so my boyfriend volenteered! What a sweetie :) He loves horses too!! How lucky am I? He used to train them also - bare back! *sigh* my hero :P

Anyways - the fact is, she did get a pretty good work out, incl road work, and a hardy 20 mins cantering. By the end of it we had gained her respect and attention which is something that I thought may be hard to cut with her - but it wasnt. I know that I still have a long way to getting her full respect - but this was a start :) I could feel it.

We are going to see her again on Thursday, then I am going by myself on Saturday and Sunday as she has a family thing on. I guess my question of this whole post is . . .
when she is exercised, she seems to lose her breath quite quickly. I know she has been out of work for about 2 years, but this isnt normal! I am not a fan of seeking help, but I have found this message board to be more friendly than others I have asked at :) This mare, Missy, is pretty unfit, she is a Connemara X Tb, about 14.3hh, large barrel, strong neck, hardy feet and legs, chestnut.

When I go to see her on Thursday, my friend (who is very less knowledged about training and 'thinks like a people, not like a horse' (as pat p says) with a strong mind - her way or the high way) wants to lunge her and just hang out to spend some time with her. I would like to do some more halter work - halting when asked!! (as she seems to disrespect that ask) Also some other simple things like moving the quaters out the way, turning/weaving, and then maybe a small lunge in walk (as she is *apparently* a dream on the lunge and to get her listening even when i am not as close) <-- but I am not fussed about lunging straight away.. What do you think??

also, another thing I was meant to ask is, would it be ok to introduce small trots right from the beginning? I know this may seem a big ask, but I was thinking: A horse is naturally walking most of the day, so more walk would not necessarily push the horse. Having small trots will push the horse a little, and really begin to exercise her and use her muscles. I know that walk is a good way to start, and get muscle happening bla bla bla . . but why not?? I have been told by a very knowledgable instructor 'always push the horse that little bit out side their comfort zone.' - and seeing as the trot is not only the horses favorite gait, but also the most natural (besides walk) this wouldnt harm them to much to have small trots?

I hope this all came out right without sounding too Bias or incorrect :( :P I have done this before with my mare, and others (why am I always stuck with mares? lol) - just its getting a little borring doing the same thing over and over - I cant introduce poles yet **** where we are they dont have any! Grr . . oh well :P

heya :)

Realy? I hope i sound lyk i know wat I am talking bout eh :P

Went to see her again yesta - miracle!! We lunged for my mate (who doesnt know that I went on thurs  ) and she was happy. Anyhoo, I said (after a work out - and yes, I ended up running around too hehe was fun! Made it interesting :P) 'have a little sit on her back' she said 'ooh but I have no helmet, and she may feak' I said 'look, for once in your life, take a chance. I can almost garentee she wont move a muscle' so I gave her a leg up - and she was a babe! Not a flinch!! so my mate had a walk around (naughty I kno, but I was close by) and then i had a turn . . perfect!

she even remembered her turn-on-the-forehands!! So we had a little walk around each - only with a halter n lead rope, and my friend really improved her confidence by far!!! I think this will work out great, because while I am teaching, the horse is remembering, and my friend is learning :) its great!!

We are going to see her again tomorrow (will take piccieS) and am going to lunge with gear on :) Cant believe how quickly its all happening!! :)

At least your getting some progress with the horse! My victor and I aren'y going too good at the moment! I am trying to get him to do more lateral movement but I think I need to go back to basics because like steering, circles and stuff! He's getting the idea but the circles aren't great! And plus he's not holding his head now! :( I know he is only six but he acts so much quieter than that and I always think he should be more advance! His jumping is amazing, its just the flatwork thats needs improving! And he hates it! Anyway sorry I'm nattering on about my own problems!

She sounds lovely don't forget pics!

Hehehe

Aww go and nutter if you wish :)

Circles aye? Hmm, am doing them with the gelding I ride, and my other mare - not so good with my mare tho :S

I have found that if you "open your door" that it works a bit better till they get the co-ordination right :) Like, when You wanna do a circle, extend your arm riiiiiiiiiiiiiiight out and really really suggest that the horse does a circle :) I have found that it helps a lot :)

Hmm, have got pix, but my mate took them and on his puta - will get them :P cya

lol tis kk - didnt kno if it wuld help of not :P

ARgH! I am about to explode!!

my mate who I am TRYING ever so hard to work with on the Missy horse is kinda getting on my nerves. I am a very patient person, and can put up with a lot of things, but not when I know that a horse is being pushed to quickly.

She rode for about . . . half hour all added up, in walk, but mostly trot :| this horse hasnt been ridden for over 2 yrs, was mostly in bareback with some work in the saddle, has a belly like you have just eaten christmas dinner and she rekons 'that she went fine. maybe we pushed her a little bit' <-- excuse me, but I need to EXPLODE!!

She wont listen to my suggestions - I am not trying to FORCE her into anything, but trying to suggest.
Example.

This was our convo : (I am J, she is G kk?)

J: Look, I just dont think that she is physically read to be ridden yet.
G: what do you mean physically ready??
J: she is just still very unfit, and I think we pushed her way over board with the amount of trotting whilst riding on Monday. *note, she rode, me only for 2 mins in walk*
G: Hmm, maybe we pushed her a little bit . .
J: I just dont feel comfortable riding her when I know she isnt ready for a rider.
G: Well thats ok . . YOU dont have to ride
J: (trying not to faint) Uh, what I mean is I think that we should take things slower . .
G: Yah, like maybe just doing work bareback riding with a slow trot and walk
J: (trying not to sound snobby by saying that a slow trot is a little harder for a horse at times) Uh, I was thinking more along the lines of just lunging, road work, ground control, walking over poles and stuff . . its a very long process to get her fit.
G: but that would take ages!! I mean that could take . . .6 months!!!!
J: Uh yah it COULD do,but not always, but wouldnt it be worth it in the end?
G: But thats like, no riding?!?!?!?!! and that would take so long!! I think that we should lung her in the trot and ride bare back.
J: Yah, well, I think that it would be better to get rid of the extra 'weight' and concentrate on her ground manners/control before riding . .
G: But that would be AGES!?

anyone slowly seeing my point? she is so determand to rush this so she can get riding - but she is forgetting the smaller but important things - small little things like ground manners and control will REALLY add up in the end.

She wont listen - at all! She just wants to ride, ride RIDE?!?!?! I some how need her to understand how important this is . . .

Can anyone help me? She just bends what I try to help her with - i dont want to ruin the horse! and I cant just 'sit back and relax' and watch her make the mistakes, because a horse can learn very quickly (she does!) and to go back and correct what was done wrong AFTER her would also be a mistake, but I cannot fix it straight away because she is 'working' and doesnt understand.

I dont mean to sound rude or impatient - but this is starting to get to me. I know we have different views n all, and I know I may seem lyk a stuck up little school girl or a female dog (putting it polietly) - but if this is what i have to be to ensure her safety and the horses wellbeing, then I must!

BTW - my friend isnt insured with a horse insurance, but by some other family thing. I have looked into this - it doesnt fully cover her for around horses ..

I agree with you, your friends pushing the horse to hard. You say she really wants to ride and also mention that you ahve other hroses your ide. Would it not be possible for her to have a short ride on one of the other horses you ride once a week? That way she might not be so despersate to ride this one. Just an idea!

Ooh thats a great idea !!

There a few probs with that. . .

The dressage horse that I ride isnt actually mine, and I usually ride every saturday and every fortnight monday - these are the only times that my friend (who is adult) has time for me to ride her lovely boy. I would offer her to ride him, but I am in no position to do so - and she has no transport to/from unless I give her a lift (which my parents are a little annoyed about as we drive her around EVERYWHERE!)

My mare, Hunny - I havent seen her in about 2 months!! My sister goes after school and does some inhand work, and sure, you can ride her easy!! But she is one of those 'marey mares' that takes a firm but extremely gentle rider on . . she has a soft mouth with a big attitude, but is touchy to the leg. she also has history of a sore shoulder - and my friend is a little 'heavier' than me and I dont wanna push it. also, my mum/gran/sister/me dont want her (or anyone) other than me and my sis riding her - its hard to explain, but while she is a plodder with me - she has a tendancy of bucking (not often, like once or twice a year lol!) - but thats not a risk I am willing to take (she doesnt mind strangers riding her, but she will test them a LOT). Also my friend is NOT ensured :|

Its hard :( Oh well, she still insists AND gets her way - she has ridden the last few times we have seen her :( But Missy is getting a VERY VERY fit girly now!! she is able to sustane the trot a lot longer and has a HUGE burst of energy :D which is awesom!!!!!!

*what my friend doesnt know, is I have gone down there with out her about 3 times now just to lunge . . she has improved HEAPS and my friend thinks its because of what we have done. I know its kind of evil/wrong, but it is getting the mare fitter and she is starting to learn quickly :) My friend doeesnt mind me going by my self, but she would rather be there. . . wanna see some piccieS?*

Sounds like your doing great :)

I think you just have to calm your friend down sound like she is abit excited.

I got my Off The Track thoroughbred after 3years break and i did alot of lunging, walking, trotting and poles, very small jumps.

I Start off walking up and down hills for 10-15minutes then a day off then walking again i did this for about a week

next week i started to work two days on one day off one of those days in the round yard working on ground work, manners, respect etc
(just a reminder on some basic things)
then the next day 10 minutes trot and 10 walk.

Worked wonders

then week three we did some pole work and longer trots, and abit of canter

now we are easily doing an hour lesson without a worry its great :D

Wow Jac you sound like your going great!!

Well, at the moment we are working on about an hours work - not all movement. About half the time is respect and manners - standing still, backing up when asked, moving (yeilding) the quaters out of the way, moving the head so we can pass . . etc

The other half is with lunging in walk and trot. It may seem a lot to put a horse straight into trot - but we started off with hardly ANY trot, and now we are working our way up to about 5 mins of trot straight, then she gets a cool down in walk, then we do some manners, then we work on lunging in walk nicely - but we jazz it up as well. We ask her to walk on a circle, then walk up next to the fence then make a circe around the tree/pole then into trot, same thing, then when I start running in a straight line she must keep the trot and keep a straight line and keep her distance from me. She is also learning to back-up on the lunge.

It's quite exciting at the moment as she has started to build muscle and has HEAPS of energy and is more than willing to work and trot! She does track up after a good work out, but we also work on the different trots - extending (which she is still learning - but does it great inhand) and collecting which she prefers :)

Mmmm my mare at home - she was a good girl. We used to go out on roads in walk/small trots, lunge, over poles small X's, ground manners, bush walks, accepting the killer plastic tarp :P

Hmm, but with Missy - I thought that poles would be a great idea!! So we got one and put it in the open area . . walked her over - perfect! took it in her stride. Into trot - fine! Then the next time she just ran straight through it! didnt pick her feet up at all? went back to walk and she just stood on it :S So there is something to work on there :)
