Lunging

Ok I know a thread has just been started but I didn't want to invade it with my questions. Ok I'm settling into the horsey world well and it's now time to set and achieve some goals. Charlie had only been used for hacking before I got him and the owner admitted he needed work and his balance sorted. This has improved in the 5 months I've had him but he's still unbalanced.

Ok so what do you think of lunging him with side reins? I would have them loose as he has a soft mouth or is this the wrong way to go about it? He can throw his head sometimes when I'm lunging if he's not in the mood I wouldn't want him getting hurt. Or if you can suggest anything else that improves balance. I get scared to canter him in the school because it feels like we'll fall over! :eek:
