The pony i usually ride is a nightmare.
Whenever i ask her to canter, she puts her head down, and does a series of bucks. She only stops if i turn her into the middle of the school and pull the reins really hard.
She also throws her head up and down in trot and won't stop.

I am going to start riding a different pony, but what can i do if i have to ride her again. Is there anything i can do to her to make her stop.

Thanks for your help.:(

Hello Taffy

I don't think this pony sounds very happy, and I don't think the people who own her know very much about horses. You can't learn to ride properly on a pony who behaves like this, and you certainly shouldn't have to pull on the reins the way you describe in order to stop.

I think you should try to find somewhere else to ride where the ponies are better behaved, because that usually means they are happier and treated more kindly. Once you've learned to ride well-schooled ponies you will know more about what to do when a pony behaves badly.

I do hope you find somewhere nicer. Let us know how you get on.

What are these folk thinking of putting a novice on such an unhappy horse? This is either a very sensitive pony that cannot tollerate unbalanced, new riders, or there is something very wrong with his tack, teeth, back or mind. Either way you, as a novice should not be riding him until you, or he has sorted out your problems.

I don't think there is anything you alone can do to stop her, your instructor should know what is causing her behaviour.

We have two horses who will tell you what they are unhappy with.
Magnús will let you know if anyone is being coarse with the reins by tearing them away from the offending rider. He won't bomb off, he just takes a length of rein which won't hurt him. Anyone with kind hands can have Magnús in an outline and rounded like a dream. Laurel will throw his head about if someone is not keeping an even, light contact. Once you have learned to keep the contact even Laurel will perfom like a dream. But these horses will tell you where you are going wrong!

Well if you have to keep riding this pony you should try to get it into a frame in a trot before asking it to canter. When you ask her to canter be sure you have a sturdy conntact and don't let the pony put it's head down. I made that mistake Wednesday night and now I have a broken collar bone :( And if you don't think you can handle her than don't ride her. A pony that gets there head and bucks can be very dangerous!!

Good Luck!!!!
