Hi!
What a great site this seems! :)
Came looking for help after my first lesson 'bouncing' arond in the saddle on the trot!
Soooooo glad to read that I'm not the only one this happens to! :p Am going to try and stop it next time.. and help the poor horse!
I'm aged 33, at 14st so poor horse has a lot to handle!
Sadly I have only riden a few times a s teen, and can't say I've ever been taught anything other than mounting and dismounting a horse! not yet anyhow! :D fingers x'd I get better!
My 6 year old daughter is also learning - different times from me, and we've just returned from purchasing her a riding hat (as the schools didn't quite fit her). Better to be safe than sorry.
Hope to get some great tips here. Still not sure how to 'rise to the trot' even after having read the section on it. So any tips greatly received!

Hi and welcome to New Rider :) This is a great site, very friendly with lots of useful advice. Don't worry, I'm sure you'll learn to rise to the trot soon - it took me a long time to learn it but then one day it just "clicked"! Hope you enjoy it here :)

Hi there and glad you joined. We have all felt like a bag of pototoes in trot and must admit still do at times (more than perhaps I would care to admit). But we still keep coming back for more and then gradually we get better. Do not be annoyed if you daughter seems to be quicker than you - somehow they learn so much quicker at that age than in thirites!!!!!
As long as it is fun then it is worth the money and pain!!!!!
Good luck

Hi and Welcome to New Rider.
I couldn't get the hang of the rising trot for weeks. The other kids in the class all got it before me so dont worry, it comes suddenly.
Anyway nice to meet you. Hope you'll enjoy joining in with the friendly banter.

Hiya and welcome.
It tooks me yonks to learn to rise to the trot. One thing to bear in mind is that some horses are very bouncy so if you always ride the same one, it may be worth asking to ride another just to see if it is you or the horse. I recently returned to riding after a long break and during my first lesson thought my rising trot had fallen by the wayside, then after riding a different horse realised it wasn't me! Oh, the relief!!!
But do persevere. It's great when you can do it - and MUCH more comfortable!!! :D

Hi!!
im new (kind of) too! it took me forever to get the rising trot!! try to feel (as you're bouncing around) the horse's rythim and just try to go with the flow. after a while you can throw the rising trit in there an dit will work fine! ;)

Hello and welcome. I hope you enjoy NR, it is a very friendly site. My membership goes back to the beginning of 2000 but I've only recently 'returned' here as a regular member.
Enjoy your riding!

Hiya and welcome :)
Where abouts in Hertfordshire do you ride? I used to ride at Contessa in Colliers End near Ware.
As others have said, take your time, get the basics right, get your seat and your balance sorted and everything else will be so much easier afterwards.
All the best and please let us know how you get on.

Hi and welcome! We've all bounced... some of us still bounce :o ... All I can say is stick with it and it all gets a lot smoother gradually (allegedly!) :)
Enjoy the site and keep us updated on progress!

Thanks everyone for your support!
Lesson 2 is tomorrow! :D took my daughter to her 2nd lesson today and they practiced rising whilst walking... maybe I need to do that! hehe
Sugar Rush - as you say you are back in the saddle and looking to stay there! :) I know what you mean about the legs, although I'm 14stone I run a few times a week, so didn't expect my legs to be too sore, but the inside muscles definately need work.. and are getting it now! hehe
I have always wanted to learn to ride, but grew up in SW London so no riding there... did get on a horse a few times, once for some great trekking in Wales. I was hooked.. and still am!
Glad to say I'm not as scared of the height these days though! hehe
I'm really surprised by how accepting my hubby has been of the £30 a week increase in our expenditures! :D and that's without my daughters new riding hat! Which she wore to eat breakfast for the first couple of mornings... :p
Anyhow.. will be back tomorrow... watch this space!

Hi purple Hugs.I grew up in Clapham SW London and learnt to ride at a stables in Streatham. Then rode for many years at Coombe Hill in Kingston ending up at Hyde Park. Keep Falcon on a farm which is now a livery yard. I moved out of London for some better riding but when I arrived in Sussex, found the riding wasn't much better. Anyway, moan over. Nice to meet you.

wow, you are lucky to have had the chance to learn to ride whilst living in london. Goodness knows how much lessons must be in london! :D
I grew up in Fulham (the wrong side of the tracks as they say...)
I often watched riders in Hyde Park and dreamt... one day!
To answer an earlier question - I ride in Hemel Hempstead - so hope to get out and about hacking one day. There is some great countryside around. The stables I am learning at is v.small but close, so it's convenient. But I believe it closes over the winter, so might be looking for another one soon enough. I know there are a few around not too far away. I think I'm already hooked! ;)
