i've had my 15yr old arabx for 6 months and he seemed perfectly sound til a few weeks ago. he first had what we thought was a musclular injury in his left shoulder... then shortly after his right rear fetlock was swollen and very sore.
vet just came out and says his right front showed the worst lameness although clearly he has problem with 3 legs...
old flexor tendon injury on left front.
check ligament injury on right front.
tenosynovitis on right hind.
treatment: injected rh tendon sheath to reduce fluid distention and chance of adhesion formation.
we don't know much about his history but she feels the flexor tendon and check ligament are both old, chronic injuries and didn't offer much hope for treatment other than slow rehab which would likely not be complete. the tendon sheath is the exact same injury my other horse has had chronically for years. she will go sound for months at a time but it sounds like the damage gets progressively worse with more adhesions so i'm worried this won't completely heal either.
she was very adamant that both horses stay on firm footing and not be turned out with other horses. permanently... not just for rehab. i'm a bit torn as i think that their overall well being of grazing and being with other horses may outweigh the difference in footing and activity levels.
so my question is does anyone have experience with these types of injuries and have any other advice? i'm getting another vet out tomorrow for a second opinion... but i'm obviously pretty upset and want to get as much information as possible so i can help them both.
thanks,
tammy
