I just purchased a 12 yr old quarter/morgan mare, and recently noticed a small bump on her side, yesterday I got home from work and there was at least 20 of the same small bumps on the same side! What are these? Could they be from insect bites? They seem to be under the skin though. My vet will be out of town until Monday, I am very concerned about these bumps. Or could they be bumps from to much protein in her food? She gets Strategy 14% twice daily and she has pasture and hay. I just don't know what it could be. I am a first horse owner and all this is new to me. Any info would be greatly apprecaited. I did put a fly sheet on her today and I am going to keep it on her when she is out in the pasture for a week to see if there is any change.
Thanks!

if they are round little neatish bumps then they are bites

could be allergies to something. like the fly spray you use. Have you changed anything lately? Started feeding a different brand, used a new fly spray, washed the fly sheet? If you haven't used the sheet lately, it might have something on it that is irritating her.

It is probably a fungus - it is easy to treat, you can purchase a wipe that will treat this.

I would say insect bites ..... get some benzyl from the chemist.
PJ what kind of fungus are you thinking?

hi, one of the school horses at my stables Bud, has a allergic reaction to bug bites wich cause them to get quite big. if they are small then they are probably just bug bites. but dont worry too bad becaus eshe might just have a allergic reaction if they are really big. because i know one of buds bites was bigger than my hand.(my hand is a medium sized hand) i hope i helped! if they dont go away soon you should get your vet to check them when he comes back! bye!:)

I'd agree. Sound like local reaction to bites. Try a repellant. If on face and they turn weepy put a flyfringe or face protector on.

We have a mare with the same thing. She is a thoroughbred and has very sensitive skin to the bug bites show up easier.

my horse came up with very simpilar things a month or two ago and i actually posted a thread about them, they were really strange, they disappeared about two weeks later, so i am assuming hers were heat bumps as they turned up at our hottest point in summer.
but they could easily have been fly bites as she is a thoughbred cross and although she doesn't have sensitive skin she does have thin skin.
