I think it's brown gloves whatever colour your jacket is. I have a grey-ish hacking jacket....the judge at my riding school's summer show said she liked that my jacket co-ordinated with the horse I rode (pure coincidence! :p ) who is a dapple grey. I had black gloves on and she said that brown gloves should always been worn in the morning, black gloves are for evenings I think!!! It's all very complicated.

Basically I think the colour of hacking jacket you choose should flatter the colour of your horse.

when i had a grey, i wore a blue tweed hacking jacket and blue velvet hat cover. on my bright bay, i wore a brown tweed jacket with green velvet hat. always looks best if you compliment your horse colour wise.

as for glove colour, i just wear what i want (but i don't do showing ;) ). i always wore white or black gloves with my grey, and brown with the bay :)

Am i correct in thinking that for showing you should have brown tack therefore brown hacking jacket would look better with brown gloves, thats what i always use but i have a black velvet hat with brown leather buckle!!!

yes you would have brown gloves with black boots normaly with a hacking jacket you wear brown gloves but you can wear a mustard colour goloves but not white or black!its up to your personal preferance as to what coulour your hacking jacket i used to have a bluey grey with my dapple grey but now i have a green tweed and i still have the dapple grey! :D if you get a velvet collor make sure you can get a hat to match eg dont buy a jacket with a navy collor if you have a black hat.

brown gloves with everything, as for your tweed colour it can be what every you like, but a green/brown tweed is more correct at higher levels.

Black gloves aren't correct at any time of day as they traditionally signify that you are in mourning - they are only correct at a funeral!

Green or Brown tweeds are generally more correct and look very smart with brown tack/brown gloves but it's up to you

What colour is your horse and what level showing (and what classes) do you want to do?

Both of these affect what colour tweed you should go for (and in the case of classes, whether you need a tweed at all!)

I think some horses make blue/grey tweeds look better and some make green/brown look better. But as has already been said, green/brown is more correct. At Olympia last year and at Windsor this year (both high class) almost everyone was wearing shades of green or brown tweeds, mainly dark. But at my local show, I saw people wearing all colours so it doesn't matter so much at local level.

Hi It will only be local level but as I need to buy it I figure may aswell buy the correct one.
My horse is Bright bay and one is black.
Not sure what classes I would enter but poss Show Hunter classes (this horse is WBx) and one of my horses is a fresian x welsh d so not sure if I can take him in m&m??

no you cant take the fresianx in m&m classes because he is not a registered purebred.
as for the other horse have you got a picture of her?

Traditionally, black gloves denote mourning for a close relative and are therefore never worn for riding as ladies didn't ride when in mourning. Brown or tan gloves with tweed, please, even greys and blues

Never heard of matching your jacket to your horse :). Most judges I have stewarded for prefer "discreet" tweeds for example like the swatches in the Derby House catalogue. One of my judges nearly had a fit when a child came into the ring with a tweed coat with lurex threads in it!

I think you should wear what suits you eg "nordic" blondes often look good in blue tweeds and browny-greens seem to suit brunettes but this is only my subjective opinion.

Oh yes and be very careful about buying a "cutaway" front jacket - unless you have a perfectly-flat-as-a-board stomach they can look dreadful!

Yes, I agree buy what ever goes best with your horse. I have a brown tweed jacket with brown gloves and black bots. I think brown would go bext with most horses except maybe grey where the blue-ish grey jackets look nicer.

Traditionally brown boots were correct wear with "rat-catcher" (tweed jacket, etc.,) but brown boots are like hens' teeth these days unless you can afford to spend squillions on hand-made ones so black boots are acceptable. But remember black boots - black hat & brown boots - brown hat.

Incidentally, while smooth leather gaiters/leggings are acceptable at low level showing, suede or synthetic half chaps don't really work and spoil the look.

Yes brown gloves with all tweeds. Again id sat blue or brown tweed as this is what im used to. Also at a more advanced level this is the colours of tweed you would be expected to wear.

Not blue, green. :) Blue isn't popular as generally blue tweeds are the cheap and poor quality ones. You can almost guarantee that if you buy a green tweed it will be much better quality, and the same for brown. I think pretty much everybody at county level steers away from blue (and pink, purple and orange), green is definately the most popular as it suits the majority of horses.

I hadn't realised that blackboots were acceptable because brown are so expensive. I thought that black boots are correct and the brown are for the likes of Lyn Russell who can get away with it? You learn something new everday ;)

there are some makes (Regent) which make brown versions of the black boots at the same price. Brown would make you stand out out in the showring, but I would rather stand out because my horse is going nicely rather than because I'd got brown boots on ;) .
Some people were wearing the brown boots last year and I thought it looked quite good, but It's a bit of a fad really and black boots will always be more popular as they are traditional and go with both tweeds and that all important navy jacket when you do your evening performance at the championships:eek: :D
