My 16yo gelding has been having really runny/crusty eyes latley. Just wondering what you can do to help or prevent it. I just wash the crusties off with a wet rag, but then they always come back. Is there any medication or ointment for runny eyes?

What colour is your hoss? It could be conjunctivitis, common in greys and brought on by bright sunlight and flies. Use a black fly mask, mesh type and get your vet to have a look and give you some fucithalmic cream for the soreness. It probably won't go all summer but at least you can help it.

He is a paint-white/chestnut color. So I will try a flymask so see how that works and I have been keeping fly spray on him to help reduce flys around his eyes.

i had the vet out to my mare, he gave me tiacil, get yourself some, you can get it from vets, and i think chemists!! my mares bay and i use a fly mask on her......conjunctivtus IS contagious but other field companions are more likley to catch it from flies etc!!

Our old boy gets gooey eyes in summer from the flys, I use Brolene eye drops (human ones) my vet said to use them and if it hadn't cleared up in a few days to get some stronger stuff off him but I have only had to once in 5 years. He said any medicated eye drops are fine, I think optrex do some as well and you can just pick it up from the chemists.

You can use Golden Eye ointment on them too - my YO gave me some for OH's horse when he looked like he'd been boxing  We think he'd got something stuck in it like straw or a twig. Anyway, vet came and checked it on his routine visit and it was ok. I feel so sorry for them when they have runny or sore eyes :(

My mare must wear her flynet all summer, otherwise flies upset her eyes very badly. Then it's a vicious circle, flies give her runny eyes and they the running attracts more flies than before!
If you are buying a net, buy one with anti-rubbing padding, otherwise she may get rub marks. Shires make good masks.

You might also consider if your hoss has had access to certain plants/leaves that cause photosensitisation, notably, oak leaves can cause this in horses.

I massage their eyes. because when they run, it means their clogged or something. but it seem's to help a little they don't seem to run as much.

My mare has always had runny eyes and when the vet came out they said just to bathe them and clean up the gunk?

It doesnt matter what season it is they just seem to always be running.

Has anyone else had this problem?

Our two year old we bought 6 weeks ago has always had runny eyes and the vet came and had a look and after all the rearing and bangin of head on the roof colonel let the vet have a look and he is now being treated for conjunctivitis. He has been on a course of medication for a week and a half and they are a lot better. Sorry don't have the name of the medication but it is in a syringe and you have to put it into their eyes.
